So you have made repairs and are at the final stage - decorating the interior. If you did everything yourself, without the involvement of a designer, then you will have to choose the decor yourself. However, it is not as difficult as it seems!
In this article we will tell you how to choose the right picture and hang it on the wall so that it becomes the perfect finishing touch in your interior design.
Size
It is logical to assume that for a large room, you need a large picture in a massive frame, and for a small room - a small one. But sometimes it is difficult to calculate the dimensions, and no standards are usually specified. So how to do it then?
We shall list, in what room big paintings with dimensions of more than 1m on one of the sides will be suitable:
- A room with high ceilings (from 310 cm and above).
- Monochrome interior in calm colors, without ornaments and bright details;
- A well-lit room, for example, with a panoramic window.
- A room where no other decor is intended.
With small paintings you need to be careful. They can "get lost" on a wall that is too large. Therefore, they should be clearly visible (emphasis on lighting) and highlighted by the frame. A good move is to have several small paintings matching each other both in style and theme.
Lifehack: a large painting can be hung in a small room, but then you need to choose the lightest and thinnest frame possible.
Orientation: horizontal, vertical, square
Horizontal (like an album sheet) painting looks the most familiar to the eye. It is well-viewed, fits into almost any room, and is suitable for absolutely any style.
Vertical paintings have the property to make the ceiling visually higher. This works especially well when the paintings are paired or are a triptych, then they, like columns, "prop up" the space and make it visually larger. Also, vertical paintings fit perfectly into narrow spaces, filling the voids.
Lifehack: in rooms with a small area vertical elements (and not only paintings) may produce a "well effect", so you need to be careful.
A square painting will require a rather interesting compositional solution. If it hangs on a rectangular wall, there should be some items of furniture or decor around the edges to visually "stretch" the picture in length. The same applies to non-standard formats: oval and circle, triangle, and so on.
Color scheme
The picture should stand out, not merge with the interior - this is the main rule. But it should not draw all the attention to itself. Unless, of course, it is not a masterpiece. You should choose a canvas according to the principle of moderate contrast. What points should be taken into account:
- Cold or warm color scheme. For "warm" rooms you should choose "warm" paintings, and for "cold" rooms - "cold" paintings.
- Dominant colors. The painting should be dominated by companions of the color that "plays first fiddle" in your interior. For example, a room in beige-yellow tones will suit a picture with rich green shades, and in a pearl-gray interior - cocoa, fuchsia, or transparent blue.
- Contrast. Sharp lines and sharp angles do not fit into every interior - as well as blurred abstraction. If you have soft stylistic and color solutions in the room, then Kandinsky, Picasso, and just something similar should be avoided.
Pay attention to the fact that the furniture is not brighter than the picture. The maximum that can be allowed is to match the intensity of the shades. Otherwise, the painting risks getting lost.
Genre and theme in accordance with the style
Here, of course, in the first place - the taste of the property owner, and then all the other recommendations. Here are short notes on what styles famous art styles will be suitable:
- landscape: classical, neoclassical, Scandinavia; maritime - in the Mediterranean style, urban art - in minimalism;
- portrait: drawing - any classical styles, photography - modern styles;
- still life: baroque, Scandinavian, loft, minimalism and hi-tech;
- abstraction: loft, hi-tech, modern, minimalism.
These are just general recommendations. If you look deeper, you should focus on the general atmosphere of the room. Also take into account the style of painting: graphics, paint, watercolor, pastel and so on. Or maybe embroidered paintings or tapestries will suit your interior.
Where to buy a painting in Cyprus
The very first place to go is to art galleries, which are plentiful both in the capital (Nicosia) and in Limassol, Larnaca, and Paphos. Local and international artists regularly exhibit there, so it's easy to find something unusual and captivating. There you can also get contacts of artists who will paint a picture to order.
The main disadvantage of such places is a rather high price. These are real works of art, and they can not be cheap. But, since not everyone is ready to spend several thousand euros on a painting, then you have to look for other options.
For example, fairs, which in the summer in Cyprus are held frequently, literally on any occasion - from church holidays to the harvest of a particular vegetable or fruit. Also in the summer on the island, there are many festivals. The essence is the same: there you can find small shops where local craftsmen exhibit their handicrafts and paintings. For a decent price, you can buy an interesting painting. But, perhaps, it will be without a frame. So you will have to go to the framing workshop yourself.
The third option is to draw a picture yourself! Even if you have no artistic education and a steady hand, you can always seek the help of masters on YouTube or buy a set for painting by numbers. Well, if you are friends with needlework, the picture can be embroidered with muline or beads.
Where to hang the painting in the room?
A large picture should be placed in the center of the composition (it is easy to determine - it is where the eye first falls).
If there are several paintings, they should not only fit harmoniously with the interior but also combine, relate, and complement each other. To place them at equal distances is a good solution if the wall is practically empty. In other cases, you will have to work on the layout.
Lifehack: the very center is not always the best place for a picture. Choose the compositional rather than geometric center of the wall.
