TOP 7 Most Popular Spring Festivals in Cyprus

Spring is a wonderful time, especially in Cyprus, where it begins early. Officially, it starts in February when the weather becomes sunny, and temperatures can reach up to 20 degrees Celsius.

The awakening of nature is a reason not only to go for more walks but also to organize various festivals. Cyprus is known for its small but very interesting outdoor events that take place during the spring season. Let's introduce you to the biggest and most interesting spring festivals in Cyprus.

Great Carnival (end of February)

The Limassol Carnival is one of the grandest events in all of Cyprus. It is celebrated on a large scale and gathers around a hundred thousand people from all over the world. The carnival lasts for 10 days and symbolizes the victory of spring over winter. Traditionally, it is held at the end of February (sometimes extending into early March), just before Lent.

The most "loud" days of the carnival are the first and the last. These are official holidays in Cyprus when everyone, from young to old, takes to the streets and participates in processions. Several venues are set up in Limassol, where interesting and unusual events take place for both adults and children.

The carnival is adorned with a large number of flowers, sculptures, and, of course, almost everyone dresses up in costumes. Sweets and delicacies are sold on the streets, music plays loudly, and on the last day, the King and Queen of the Carnival are chosen. In other words, it is very difficult to describe this event – it is better to see it with your own eyes!

The carnival also takes over Paphos. There it is celebrated more modestly but still brightly, interestingly, and authentically. Just like in Limassol, there are processions throughout the city, followed by evening events. It's great that anyone can participate in them – all you have to do is step out onto the street.

Tulip Festival in Polemi (early April)

The village of Polemi, located near Paphos, is famous not only for its wine but also for its fields of wild tulips. Interestingly, these tulips are not cultivated but grow in the wild, which adds to their charm. When they bloom, the area turns into a magical kingdom.

The tulip blooming season starts in early April, so the festival is usually held on the first Sunday of the month. Holding the event on a weekend allows more people, both locals and visitors, to attend.

Here are some interesting activities you can enjoy at the festival:

  1. Taste wine (which is free) from the local winery.
  2. Watch traditional Cypriot dances and listen to music.
  3. Sample traditional Cypriot cuisine, especially sweet lokmades.
  4. Meet new people.
  5. Entertain your family and children in an atmosphere of universal fun.

Usually, quite a few people gather at the festival. Be prepared to find yourself in a lively place, but with a relaxed atmosphere.

Street Life Festival (late April)

A modern festival that has been held on the streets of Limassol since 2009, it stands out for its uniqueness and colorful nature. Quite literally: on a certain day, artists take to the streets and turn dull walls of buildings and sidewalks into canvases for their creations. That's why many people simply call it the graffiti festival.

However, in reality, it's much more than that: the festival features break-dancers, singers, DJs, street artists, and even parkour athletes. In other words, the Street Life Festival fully lives up to its name.

The event takes place on the streets of the Old Town of Limassol, and it's not just for entertainment – it plays a significant role in changing the city's appearance. Traditional culture merges with modernity, which is very popular in today's Cyprus.

Film Day (late April)

A large international event known as Cyprus Film Days is held in cinemas in Limassol and Nicosia and lasts for about a week. During this time, many screenings take place, ranging from local Cypriot films to the latest offerings of world cinema.

The festival tries to cover all age groups, from children and teenagers to film connoisseurs. The formats are also varied, including short films and long multi-episode movies. Screenings are usually in Greek or English.

Entrance to one screening costs 5 euros, but those who want to experience as much as possible should opt for a single ticket for all days, which costs only 30 euros. Discounts are available for students and schoolchildren. In Limassol, the festival is organized by the Rialto Cinema, and in Nicosia – by ZenaPalace.

Anthestiria, or Flower Festival (April or May)

Anthestiria is a grand flower festival with elements of a carnival. The festivities are most vibrant in Paphos, although the festival is also celebrated in Limassol and Larnaca. For this event, not only Cypriot flowers are used but also imported ones, creating a magnificent spectacle.

It's interesting to note that floriculture and, consequently, floristry are not very common in Cyprus, so giving someone a flower (let alone a bouquet) is considered a generous gesture. But during Anthestiria, it's customary to exchange flowers.

In the cities where the festival takes place, there are street markets, events with music and dance performances. This kind of entertainment will appeal to both adults and children, so it is recommended for everyone to attend.

Rose Festival (late May)

The Rose Festival is held in the village of Agros (Limassol) and is one of the most famous festivals in Cyprus. It is related to the rose blooming season and the collection of rose petals for the production of rose oil. In addition to visiting the magnificent blooming place, you can participate in other interesting activities:

  1. - Visit an agro-market and buy traditional sweets and treats.
  2. - Listen to traditional Cypriot music.
  3. - See (and purchase) products from local artisans, such as ceramics, baskets, and household items.
  4. - Take a walk in the beautiful highland landscapes.

Of course, leaving such a festival without rose-related products is simply impossible! You can find essential oils, cosmetics, perfumes, and even live flowers. Don't forget to take amazing photos!

Strawberry Festival (late May)

When the flowers fade, it's time for berries, literally. Strawberries in Cyprus appear as early as May, so by the end of the month, the first agricultural festivals and strawberry fests kick off.

The event takes place in the village of Deryneia, located in Famagusta and divided by the buffer zone. Therefore, visiting it will be interesting not only from the perspective of tasting strawberries but also for history enthusiasts (remember that Cyprus has a complex history).

In addition to fresh strawberries, you can enjoy strawberry ice cream, jam, juice, and even liqueur. Guests are offered an interesting music and dance program, as well as an area for children's entertainment.
