Everyone is interested in what is hidden up there, in the heights, where our eyes cannot penetrate. But only a few people become real cosmonauts, but everyone can touch the Universe (literally). For this purpose, you just need to visit the planetarium.
Recently Cypriots can do it without even leaving their favorite island. In June last year in the suburbs of Nicosia, a large-scale planetarium was opened, which is one of the ten best in Europe. The exact address of the capital's new attraction is Stavrou Stylianidi, Episkopeio, 2642 Nicosia, Cyprus. By the way, if you are knocked down in search of interesting places where you can have fun and spend time with children, this is a great option. However, keep in mind that little fidgeters may like it so much that they will not be able to get out of the planetarium afterwards.
If you live in Limassol, the easiest way to get to the Cypriot planetarium is by car.
Type Episkopeio into your navigation device and follow the indicated route. At the entrance to the village, you will see signs, which are placed quite often. Another landmark is the Church of St. Andrew the Apostle, next to which there is a planetarium. In general, you will hardly get lost. And the planetarium itself is not difficult to recognize. It is a beautiful snow-white building with a round dome, which resembles a hemisphere.
The history of the creation of the Cypriot planetarium, as well as the financing of its construction, belongs to a businessman from St. Petersburg Vyacheslav Zarenkov. The grandiose project was developed by the famous architect Angelos Savvidis. The construction of the unique for the island of Aphrodite attraction was carried out by the company T&O Planetarium of Cyprus. The planetarium project is non-commercial. The main goal pursued by the businessman and philanthropist was educational and outreach work.
At the entrance to the planetarium you get into a spacious hall, where there is the cash zone and a store with an abundance of souvenirs (be sure to buy a couple of souvenirs on the way out to remember the time you spent). A little further there a small but cozy cafe, where you can drink coffee or juice, have a snack, a sandwich or a cake. Believe me, a long excursion will definitely awaken your appetite.
The pricing policy in the Planetarium is not simple, and unprepared visitors will find it difficult to understand it. The thing is that in separate zones you need to buy separate tickets. The cost starts from 5 euros. All tickets can be paid at the ticket office in cash or by card.
Simultaneously 186 people can stay in the planetarium.
The planetarium consists of three buildings with a total area of about 900 m2, which are joined in the center by a huge 18.25-meter dome, the largest in the Eastern Mediterranean. The dome, installed by RSA Cosmos-Konica Minolta, is equipped with a powerful digital system and 10 Sony VPL-GTZ280 4K projectors. A long-lasting laser light source combined with 4K SXRD panel technology provides bright, sharply detailed images that are projected onto the Astro-Tec screen. To enhance the visual experience, the planetarium also features Dolby Atmos 5.1 surround sound, a revolutionary spatial sound technology that creates an immersive soundscape. Audio and powerful visuals combine to create an immersive and truly unforgettable experience. Directly beneath the dome is a demonstration room. Visitors to the planetarium have a unique opportunity to watch scientific and feature films about space.
The planetarium also has a modern observatory under a 4-meter robotic dome, which is equipped with the most powerful telescope and helioscope in Cyprus.
With the telescope, visitors can observe the night sky. The telescope has a diameter of 14 inches/356 mm, an online remote control, and a high-resolution camera for taking pictures of planets and space. The helioscope is designed for daytime observation of the Sun and spectacular solar flares.
The telescope and helioscope are equipped with a 62-megapixel Sony IMX455 CMOS camera for real-time photography and remote streaming. This allows live streaming from the observatory directly into the planetarium dome, conference room, outdoor amphitheater, and other planetariums around the world. In other words, visitors have the opportunity to watch images taken from any other telescope in real-time.
Next to the observatory is an amphitheater with a capacity for 250 people with a 15 m2 outdoor video wall, sound equipment, and lighting for live performances.
For fans of virtual reality, the planetarium has a VR hall with game simulators, as well as VR Edutainment Hall, where you can watch short educational and entertaining movies about planets or play on a 100-inch interactive table with a flat-screen. In addition, the planetarium has a modern conference room for 90 people with an 18 m2 video wall, which provides everything for events, presentations, and meetings.
