Frameless doors (or hidden doors) are something new for Cyprus. Frameless doors can rarely be found even in elite multi-storey new buildings. Nevertheless, their popularity is increasing, so we recommend that you get acquainted with this miracle of interior design.
Hint: it is recommended to install a hidden door before finishing. Therefore, if you bought an apartment in a house that is still under construction, deal with this issue as early as possible, then you won’t have to “break down the walls” and redo everything.
What hidden doors are
From its name it becomes clear that these are doors that look invisible. Some of them simply stand out a little against the wall, while others completely merge with the wall, so it’s simply impossible to notice them.
The effect of invisibility is achieved due to the special design of the door frame. It allows you to mount the door without slopes and make it an organic continuation of the wall. Of course thanks to the special hidden loops.
Different types of hidden doors
We will not delve into the details of the installation technology. It is important for us to understand how it will look in the interior and how functional it will be. From this point of view, three classifications can be distinguished: by the type of the door finish, by "secrecy" and by the method of opening.
By the kind of its finish
Two options are possible here: when the door is sold with its finish (as a rule, it is plain, although there are other options) or only prepared for a door finish. The second option obviously wins. It is more budgetary, gives room for imagination. It allows you to style the door in the same way as the wall and make it almost invisible.
By "secrecy"
This implies whether the door is invisible from two sides or only from one side. The first option - the door is the same thickness as the wall, it merges with it in both rooms. The second option - the door is thinner than the wall, in one room it is hidden, and in the second room it is ordinary. This option is cheaper.
By way of opening
More familiar and easy to install is a regular swing door. It opens only in one direction and is equipped with a handle. Other options may seem more interesting, but they are laborious and require the hands of an experienced craftsman:
- sliding door - as a rule, it does not have handles, it moves to one or both sides;
- revolving door- opens with a simple push in both directions;
- pendulum door - opens in both directions (these are often found in shopping centers, supermarkets), not always suitable for residential premises.
If there are children, sliding and revolving doors are considered the safest.
Benefits of Hidden Doors
Such stylish and comfortable doors have more than one advantage. As a rule, they all easily outweigh the disadvantages (which we will discuss below).
Invisibility
Of course, this is the most basic and obvious advantage. The door on the wall is an interior detail.
Minimalism
This type of interior doors is great for implementing minimalist styles. And minimalism is becoming more and more popular in Cyprus.
Why? Read our article.
This is especially true for large rooms where there are several doors. They are not conspicuous and do not attract attention, thereby maintaining "neutrality" and supporting the "minimum things" philosophy.
Ideal for small rooms
Hidden doors visually take up less space and do not violate its integrity. This is extremely important for rooms with a small area. However, for spacious rooms, hidden doors are good if the task is to make the room even more free and open.
Absolutely any size
A flush-mounted door can be made quite small (for example, for some utility rooms) or huge - right up to the ceiling - and wide. It is both functional and beautiful in the case of individual design solutions.
Freedom to choose finishes
A standard door, even a custom one, is still a door. But the "invisible" can be finished in such a way that it will literally become a home "Narnia". This solution is ideal for those who want to embody the most daring ideas in interior design!
Hint: it is not at all necessary to make a hidden door “under the wall”.
Disadvantages of hidden doors
All the shortcomings relate specifically to its installation, and not to the doors in general. So, as long as you are willing to commit the time and money, everything will be fine.
Early editing
Installing a hidden door requires early preparation. At the time of installation of the door frame, a fine finish of the floor and a rough finish of the walls should be performed. If ou change the doors in a residential area, you will have to make quite an impressive repair.
Difficulty of installation
This technology has a rather high level of complexity of implementation. In addition, it is not yet popular in Cyprus, so it will not be so easy to find masters. Be sure to pay attention to the fact that the repairmen have experience in installing this particular type of door.
As usual in Cyprus (and not only), look for a master among your friends, you will be able to find someone who does a good job of installing hidden doors.
High price
Complexity drives up the cost. In addition, in ready-made housing, additional costs will be required for the dismantling of ordinary doors and the preparation of a door frame for "invisibility". Also, the possibility that some of the materials will have to be ordered from the mainland cannot be discarded, therefore, transportation costs will be added.
The need for frequent repairs
This is not about the fact that hidden doors often break. You will need to change the door trim when updating the wall, floor and interior design in general. It would seem that this is not so troublesome, but still this nuance must be taken into account.
Some useful ideas
This is room for imagination. They can be used to implement the most unusual ideas! Here are just a few examples:
- The door can be a drawing board in the nursery. It looks organic and carries quite a weighty functional load.
- Door to utility room. If interior doors and doorways are sometimes important accent elements in the interior, then the entrance to the utility room (laundry, boiler room, dressing room) is best masked. This allows you to make hidden doors.
- Mirror or glass door. In the first case, the door can act as a full-length mirror (and not only - read more about mirrors in the interior in our article). In the second case, this is an excellent solution for rooms with panoramic windows and access to the terrace. Which is very important for new buildings in Cyprus.
- You can hide something dimensional. If you install a hidden door over a niche, then even a large object can be discreetly placed in this very niche. For example, a refrigerator or a set of washer + dryer.
- Door under the stairs or in the stairs. The hidden door can be disguised so that it becomes one with a large staircase. It is very convenient if you do not want to violate the integrity of the space.
- Closet door. This wonderful design will look like a hinged wardrobe. Two in one allows you to save space. Here you need to understand two things: the door (and, accordingly, the wall) must have a good thickness in order to accommodate something, such a “locker” will not work for storing something heavy.
