The authorities of Nicosia intend to radically modernize the linear park along the Pedieos River in Nicosia.
The project, estimated at € 24.5 million, will be co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the European Union Cohesion Fund (CF) and the European Union Recovery and Resilience Fund.
According to Strovolos Mayor Andreas Papacharalambous, the aim is for the Pedieos River to become a “green” axis on which the development of the municipalities involved will be based and an example of sustainable urban development both nationally and regionally.
The reconstruction of the park is expected to begin in the first half of 2022. The final deadline for the project is scheduled for 2025.
Among the most important innovations is the creation of a crisis management center for the Pedieos Linear Park, which, according to Mayor Strovolos, will operate in the SPE Strovolos building. Communication with the crisis management center will be carried out around the clock. People will be able to contact them for questions of criminal behavior, injury, flood or fire.
The existing lighting system in the park will be changed to LED and LEM.
Park infrastructure
According to the municipality, for the convenience of pedestrians and cyclists, 14 new bridges will be erected in the park along the entire length of the river. In addition, the park will renovate bike paths, install a playground, equip a place for walking dogs, and create places for recreation and active pastime. Every 400 meters in the park there will be containers for separate waste collection.
