The authorities of Nicosia intend to radically modernize the linear park along the Pedieos River in Nicosia.
Intelligent monitoring system, fiber optic network, lighting system using renewable energy sources (RES), new cycle and footpaths, crisis management center, 14 new bridges, fire and flood detectors, recreation areas and information stands - this and much more will be implemented according to the plan for the integrated spatial development of the municipalities of Nicosia, Strovolos, Lakatamia, Engomi, Agios Dometios, Aglantzia.
The project, estimated at € 24.5 million, will be co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the European Union Cohesion Fund (CF) and the European Union Recovery and Resilience Fund.
According to Strovolos Mayor Andreas Papacharalambous, the aim is for the Pedieos River to become a “green” axis on which the development of the municipalities involved will be based and an example of sustainable urban development both nationally and regionally.
The reconstruction of the park is expected to begin in the first half of 2022. The final deadline for the project is scheduled for 2025.
As you may know, the Pedieos River during the rains is a constant source of problems for public utilities. As a result of heavy rains, it is filled with debris and foreign objects brought by the stream of water. The heads of the municipalities of Strovolos, Lakatamia and Nicosia (it is through their territory that the river flows) are constantly fighting this phenomenon. The modernization of the park will help solve this problem.
Crisis Management Center
Among the most important innovations is the creation of a crisis management center for the Pedieos Linear Park, which, according to Mayor Strovolos, will operate in the SPE Strovolos building. Communication with the crisis management center will be carried out around the clock. People will be able to contact them for questions of criminal behavior, injury, flood or fire. Crisis tracking efforts will be backed up by cameras that will be placed along the park, as well as free Wi-Fi. At the suggestion of the technocratic project support group, a 2.5 km fiber-optic network will be installed in the park.
The existing lighting system in the park will be changed to LED and LEM. This means that depending on the workload of the linear park, the lighting level will be adjusted. That is, it will grow from 20% to 80% during the daytime, and from 12 o'clock at night, the lighting level will again drop to 20%. The park's reconstruction plans also include the use of renewable energy sources. It is expected that pressure gauges will be installed throughout the park, which will generate a current proportional to walking. There will also be installed photovoltaic cells that will use solar energy.
According to the municipality, for the convenience of pedestrians and cyclists, 14 new bridges will be erected in the park along the entire length of the river. In addition, the park will renovate bike paths, install a playground, equip a place for walking dogs, and create places for recreation and active pastime. Every 400 meters in the park there will be containers for separate waste collection.
In addition, an ecological center and a museum, kiosks selling local products will appear on the territory of the park. Charging stations for electric vehicles will also be installed here. And all parking lots on the territory of the public space will be made environmentally friendly, without the use of asphalt, with the help of special water-permeable materials.
