Cyprus has been included in Forbes’ 2026 list of the best places to retire abroad. In total, the publication considered 96 destinations in 24 countries across five continents.
For Cyprus, Forbes highlighted four locations — Limassol, Paphos, Larnaca and Pyrgos. The destinations were assessed based on the cost of living, access to healthcare, taxes, safety, political stability, quality of life, air connections with the United States, prevalence of English and the risk of natural disasters.
One of the island’s main advantages is its cost of living. According to Forbes, it is approximately one-third lower than the average in the United States. Other advantages include the sunny climate, numerous beaches, Greek culture and an already well-established international community.
Forbes also highlights the low crime rate, political stability and widespread use of English. The public healthcare system is rated as good. Permanent residents can use GESY, paying 2.65% on income from pensions and social benefits, while investment income is not included in this calculation. Among the main risks in Cyprus, Forbes highlights the possibility of wildfires and flooding.
How Much Does It Cost to Move to Cyprus and What Residence Permit Options Are Available?
Cyprus may appeal to American retirees not only because of its cost of living but also because of its tax conditions. Cyprus and the United States have a double taxation agreement, while special tax regimes are available to foreign residents. For long-term residence, retirees can consider several residence permit options. In particular, there is the Category F residence permit, which requires applicants to demonstrate a stable annual income. The Forbes publication cites an amount of around $35,000 per couple (approximately €30,000).
Another option is linked to purchasing property. To obtain the relevant type of residence permit, the property purchased must be worth at least $350,000 (€300,000), subject to the programme’s established requirements. Future retirees should also take transport accessibility into account. There are no regular direct flights between Cyprus and the United States, so the journey usually requires at least one connection.
Which Cities in Cyprus Are Suitable for Retirement?
Forbes considers Limassol one of the most attractive options for those who value well-developed urban infrastructure, the sea, restaurants and an international environment. However, it is also one of the most expensive cities on the island. Paphos has traditionally been popular with foreign residents thanks to its relaxed lifestyle, seaside location and large international community. The city may appeal to those looking for a slower pace of life.
Larnaca combines proximity to the sea, well-developed infrastructure and an international airport. At the same time, housing costs are generally lower than in Limassol. The Pyrgos area may suit those who prefer a quieter atmosphere and life outside a major city while retaining access to Limassol’s infrastructure.
Cyprus Is Part of a Growing Retirement Migration Trend
Cyprus is one of 24 countries recommended by Forbes for Americans looking to live abroad after retirement. The list also includes Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece, France, Malta, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Mexico, Panama and Uruguay. Interest among American retirees in living outside the United States continues to grow. According to Forbes, by the end of 2024, around 712,000 American retirees were receiving Social Security benefits while living abroad. Their number increased by 20% over 13 years.
For Cyprus, this means additional potential for growing demand from foreign retirees, particularly in cities with well-developed infrastructure, good access to healthcare services and established international communities.
