Schools and English Language Courses in the Free Areas of Famagusta

This paradise corner of Cyprus with golden beaches, turquoise water, and the atmosphere of an eternal resort, which you do not want to leave even when the question of education arises.

Today let's talk about what opportunities there are in the free neighborhoods of Famagusta for learning English for adults, as well as about summer language camps for children. We will also talk about the local international school Xenion Privat School in Paralimni. I wish I could tell you more, but the private school here is truly one of a kind.

Located in the East of the island, Famagusta is one of the 6 major regions of Cyprus. It is more commonly referred to and spelled differently by locals as the Diocese of Ammochostos (Επαρχια Αμμμοχωστος). Since 1974, most of it has been controlled by the unrecognized TRNC. And only a small area in the south of the region - the towns of Ayia Napa, Paralimni, and Protaras - still belong to the state of Cyprus.

Famagusta schools

A list of all accredited schools and their addresses can be found on the website of the Ministry of Education of Cyprus. As on the whole island, there are Greek schools in Famagusta, where education is free for all children, and lessons are taught in Greek, and private schools.

If you plan to stay on the island for many years, it is advisable to send your child to a Greek school, as this is the quickest way to learn the local language and integrate into society.

Private schools are usually chosen by families of foreigners and all those who plan to further study at universities in Europe and America. They most often teach in English according to the British program. Upon graduation, students receive the appropriate certificate, sometimes in addition to the local Greek certificate Apolitrion.

The average annual cost of education in a private school in Cyprus is not high: it is 3 thousand euros in primary grades and 7 thousand euros in high school. For comparison: training in a private school in England is rarely cheaper than 20 thousand euros a year.

However, today the school is popular with expats from all corners of the world. There is a kindergarten, primary and high school, boarding house, summer camp, and even English courses for adults.

Xenion Privat Junior School is for children from 3 to 12 years old. Here you can prepare for school, start or continue with a traditional British program.

The flagship project is the Xenion High School. High School graduates receive:

  1. Apolitrion (school leaving certificate), which is recognized by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Cyprus and worldwide.
  2. 4-6 passed A level exams, 8 passed IGCSE exams, IELTS.
  3. Certificate of proficiency in a second foreign language.
  4. Certificate of ICT literacy.
  5. Diploma for participation in international or national programs such as European Youth Parliament and Medi.M.U.N.

Xenion Boarding House is a large international community with students from different countries from all over the world. You can live and study here at the same time, and go home on weekends or holidays. The school recently presented a new residence for students. Students who stay at the boarding house for at least 2 years receive a student visa for long-term residence.

Before admission, children are given sample English and math tests so that they can prepare at home. The sample tasks are updated annually and posted on the school's website, so anyone can test their knowledge. The entrance fee for participation in the exam is 100 euros. The school offers discounts from 20% to 50% for the education of the second and subsequent children. In general, this order operates in many private schools in Cyprus, but the discounts are usually not so high. At the same time, the conditions may change from year to year.
