Cyprus is continuing the active rollout of “smart” electricity meters. The works cover all districts of the island and form part of a long-term program to modernize the power grid and introduce digital energy management. The aim of the initiative is to improve metering accuracy, reduce technical losses, and create the basis for more flexible tariffs and the integration of renewable energy sources—an especially relevant goal for Cyprus amid rising electricity prices and the EU’s climate commitments.
Where Works Are Taking Place in Nicosia and Limassol
In Nicosia, the installation of smart meters in January will be concentrated in the Strovolos area. The works will cover the zone bounded by Strovolos Avenue, Griva Digeni Avenue, Agios Prokopios, and Archangel Michael, an area that includes both residential neighborhoods and commercial properties with high energy consumption.
In Limassol, the project will cover several areas at once. Equipment replacement will take place in buildings on both sides of Archbishop Leontios I Avenue, as well as across a large area bounded by Archbishop Makarios III Avenue and the streets of Moni Machera, Tagmatarchou Pouliou, Demosthenous Mitsi, Navarinou, Gladstonos, Agia Zoni, and Thessaloniki. This district is considered one of the most densely populated and dynamically developing parts of the city.
Larnaca and the Free Areas of Famagusta: Focus on Coastal Zones
In Larnaca, works will be carried out in coastal areas: Livadia, Oroklini, and Pyla, as well as on both sides of Ammochostou Avenue (along the Dhekelia Road), where numerous tourist facilities and residential complexes are located.
In the free areas of Famagusta, the installation of smart meters will continue in Paralimni, along Protaras Avenue near the Church of Saint Barbara, and in the Kapparis area—from the Agia Triada roundabout to Konstantinos Karamanlis Street. At the same time, works will be carried out on both sides of the Protaras–Cape Greco Avenue and in the Profitis Ilias area, which is actively developing as a tourist destination.

Paphos and Technical Aspects of the Replacement
In Paphos, meter replacement is planned on both sides of the Tombs of the Kings Avenue, as well as in the area between Apostle Paul Avenue and the municipal boundaries of Chloraka. These zones include both residential neighborhoods and popular tourist areas, making the project particularly important for the stability of electricity supply.
For the safe installation of the new equipment, a short-term power outage is required. The duration of the interruption, as emphasized, will not exceed 20 minutes. The electricity provider apologizes for any inconvenience, noting that these temporary measures are necessary for long-term improvements in service quality.
What Smart Meters Will Bring to Cyprus Residents
The introduction of smart meters is considered a key step toward a “smart” energy grid in Cyprus. The new system will make it possible in the future to introduce more transparent billing, quickly detect faults, and lay the groundwork for dynamic tariffs and the active use of solar energy, which the island has in abundance. In the longer term, this should lead to more efficient energy consumption management and reduced strain on the power system during peak periods.
