In Cyprus, there is an acute shortage of labor in all sectors of the economy.

The construction sector is one of the most in need of foreign personnel, but it is not the only one. The tourism and delivery markets also need migrants.

By the way, the Cyprus Employers & Industrialists Federation (OEB) conducted a study, according to which it turned out that about 320 local companies are currently experiencing difficulties with hiring employees. In particular, about 9 thousand jobs remain vacant today.

The OEB assesses the current situation on the labor market as the largest crisis in the last 15 years. Experts call the coronavirus pandemic one of the main reasons for the shortage of labor, which forced many to leave the country, after which at least 15% of employees never returned. The demand for the vacancies they occupied soared by 70% in October 2021 (compared to October 2020).

Among the specialties that are in high demand: construction workers, movers, cleaners, accountants, secretaries.

There is also a serious shortage of nurses, which the Ministries of Labour and Health are already aware of. As for the IT sector, there are about 3 thousand vacancies available here. Finally, there is a shortage in the hotel industry at all levels - from maids to senior managers.

It is noteworthy that the shortage of personnel, which business is actively talking about, is adjacent to the growth of unemployment. So, the number of registered unemployed in Cyprus today is about 11 thousand people. And all because Cypriots do not go to vacant places — they do not agree to a salary that foreigners could accept. It was on average 20% lower.

In order to solve the problem with the shortage of low-skilled employees, the OEB proposed to the Ministry of Labour to allow students from third countries, as well as refugees, to work at food processing enterprises. Local officials hope to fill the gap in the shortage of highly qualified personnel with the help of new incentives to attract foreign business, which are expected to come into force on January 1, 2022.

Abandoning migrant workers in the coming decades is an unlikely scenario, according to experts interviewed by OEB. Therefore, the adaptation and socialization of newcomers, changes in legislation regarding the protection of the rights of this category of the population are necessary measures that should contribute to a stable influx of foreign workers to Cyprus.
