The US authorities intend to abolish entry visas for citizens of the Republic of Cyprus.

Recently, US Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas said the United States is considering adding four more European countries to its visa-abolition program.

We have four candidates: Cyprus, Israel, Bulgaria and Romania. We are very focused on the program, said Mayorkas.

In September, the United States added Croatia to its visa waiver program. Travel Association CEO Roger Doe noted that the abolition of visas for Croats would give $100 million to the US economy.

By the way, in February, Mayorkas spoke with European Commissioner for Internal Affairs Ylva Johansson, they both "expressed continued interest in working with Cyprus, Bulgaria, Croatia and Romania to meet the requirements for the visa abolition program."

As you may know, Washington has already approved a visa-free regime for 40 countries.

Their citizens can stay in the United States for up to 90 days without obtaining a visa. Tourists traveling on a visa-free program undergo anti-terrorism checks through the system ESTA. More than 20 million people visit the United States every year under this program.

In January of this year, Cyprus and the United States signed a Declaration of Intent to strengthen cooperation on border security issues, while reaffirming their shared determination to continue to work towards full reciprocity of visas.

The agreement was signed by Foreign Secretary Nikos Christodoulides and Acting Secretary of the US Department of Homeland Security Chad Wolf the day after they both attended the groundbreaking ceremony in Larnaca for the CYCLOPS training center.

Christodoulides noted that the accession of Cyprus to the visa-free travel program was discussed in detail . He did not go into details, but said that soon Cypriot passport holders would not be required to obtain a visa to travel to the United States.

There are some US program commitments that need to be met. A working group has been created on this issue, - said Christodoulides.
