Total Value of Unpaid Cheques in Cyprus Exceeds €47,000

The Central Bank of Cyprus has published the latest data on unpaid cheques for March 2026. In total, 18 cheques worth €47,773 were included in the preliminary list during the month. These cheques were issued but not honored due to insufficient funds in the accounts. Such statistics help assess the level of financial discipline among both companies and private individuals.

Who issues unpaid cheques more often

Out of the 18 problematic cheques, 7 were issued by legal entities — that is, companies and organizations. Another 4 cheques were issued by natural persons, meaning private individuals. The remaining cases are linked to other categories of debtors. In March, 15 individuals were entered into the Central Information Register (CAP). Of these, 6 were legal entities, 2 were private individuals, and 7 were individuals who control legal entities. In simple terms, both companies and their directors or owners were added to the “blacklist.”

Results of the first quarter of 2026

From January to March 2026, a total of 43 unpaid cheques were recorded in Cyprus, with a combined value of €142,324. For comparison, in the first quarter of 2025, there were 61 such cheques amounting to €156,564. The number has decreased by nearly one-third — from 61 to 43. The total value has also declined, though less significantly. This indicates a positive trend: Cypriot companies and citizens are becoming more disciplined in honoring cheque payments.

How many people were added to the debtor registry

In the first quarter of 2026, 32 individuals were entered into the Central Information Register. Of these, 14 were legal entities, 3 were private individuals, and 15 were individuals controlling companies. A year earlier, in the first quarter of 2025, there were 24 such entries: 9 legal entities, 6 private individuals, and 9 company owners. The increase from 24 to 32 entries may seem concerning, but it is important to note that the total value of unpaid cheques has decreased. This means more people are being recorded, but for smaller debts.

Additional context

It is worth noting that unpaid cheques are an important indicator of economic conditions. An increase in such cases usually signals financial difficulties among businesses and the population. However, the data for the first quarter of 2026 appears encouraging: compared to the same period in 2025, the number of bounced cheques decreased by 29.5% (from 61 to 43), while the total value dropped by 9% (from €156,564 to €142,324). This may be due to stricter banking controls, improved financial literacy, or a gradual improvement in the economic situation in Cyprus. Nevertheless, the March figure of over €47,000 serves as a reminder that the issue has not disappeared entirely. The Central Bank will continue monitoring the situation, and April’s data will show whether the positive trend continues.
