The renovated Pattichio Park has officially been handed over to Larnaca Municipality. The area has become more modern and functional. The main architectural feature of the redevelopment is a circular elevated pedestrian bridge surrounding the existing amphitheatre. The new structure creates an additional walking route and allows visitors to enjoy views of the park from above.
The project also includes a café-restaurant, a children’s playground, a botanical garden with a variety of plants and two observation decks overlooking Aliki Salt Lake. New pedestrian and cycling paths have been created, landscaping has been upgraded, and information boards and signs have been installed. As a result, the park has become not only a recreational area but also part of the tourist route around Larnaca Salt Lake.
Amphitheatre Upgraded and Park Made More Accessible
The redevelopment also included the Pattichio Amphitheatre. The audience seating was replaced, entrances and railings were repaired, and new vandal-resistant lighting was installed. Particular attention was paid to accessibility. The park has been adapted for people with disabilities, while vehicle access within the area has been restricted. Security services and patrols operate around the clock to improve safety. The new infrastructure is expected to make Pattichio an attractive destination for both Larnaca residents and tourists. The park combines recreational, sports and cultural areas with the natural landscape surrounding the Salt Lake.
Why the Reconstruction Sparked Controversy
Work on the park began on October 23, 2023. The contractor was Miltiades Neophytou Civil Engineering Constructors & Developers. The project attracted criticism from some Larnaca residents while construction was still underway. The main concerns were environmental: Pattichio is located next to a protected area within the Natura 2000 network. Residents expressed concerns about the scale of construction and its potential impact on the environment. The reconstruction was originally scheduled to be completed earlier, but the actual timetable was delayed by approximately eight months. One of the reasons cited was restrictions on construction work during the summer due to the high risk of wildfires.
Pattichio Becomes Part of Larnaca’s Urban Renewal
The total cost of the project was €5.3 million. The reconstruction was implemented under the THALIA 2021–2027 Cohesion Policy Programme with financial co-funding from the European Union. The redevelopment of Pattichio forms part of broader plans to modernise Larnaca. At the same time, the municipality is upgrading central streets and developing a more accessible urban environment. For the city, the new park is significant not only as a public space. Thanks to its pedestrian and cycling routes, observation decks and proximity to the Salt Lake, Pattichio is becoming another major attraction for Larnaca residents and visitors.
