The Famagusta District Local Government Organization (EOA) has reported significant progress in processing applications for various types of permits. According to the authority, efforts to reduce backlogs and accelerate procedures are already delivering tangible results, an important development for Cyprus’s construction sector and the region’s overall growth.
More Than 4,500 Applications and a High Processing Rate
According to official figures, the EOA of Famagusta has received a total of 4,514 applications for various permits. Of these, 3,373 applications have already been fully processed. Among them, 1,804 relate to planning permits, while 1,569 concern building permits.
This means that nearly three-quarters of all submitted applications, or 74.72%, have completed the full review process. For Cyprus, where permit approval times have long been considered one of the challenges facing the construction market, these figures send a positive signal to both investors and property owners.
Nearly 95% of Applications Approved
Particularly noteworthy are the approval statistics. Out of the 3,373 applications reviewed, 3,191 received a positive decision.
This represents 94.6% of all completed cases. Only 149 applications were rejected, accounting for 4.42%, while 33 applications, or 0.98%, were withdrawn by the applicants themselves.
The EOA of Famagusta notes that the low rejection rate reflects not only the quality of the submitted documentation but also the work of officials who guide applicants through the process and help resolve issues before a final decision is made.

Processing Has Accelerated Significantly in 2026
The performance figures for the current year are particularly impressive. Since the beginning of 2026, a total of 926 permits have been issued and finalized.
During the same period in 2025, the figure stood at 602 permits. This represents an increase of 53.82%, demonstrating a substantial acceleration in administrative procedures.
Authorities attribute this improvement to better internal organization, stronger coordination between departments, and the gradual implementation of new application-processing methods.
The positive trend is also reflected in monthly statistics. In May 2026, the number of completed permits was 24.11% higher than in the previous month. Compared to May 2025, the increase reached 59.84%.
These figures suggest that the acceleration is not temporary but is becoming a sustained trend. Against the backdrop of active residential, tourism, and commercial development in the Famagusta region, this progress is highly significant for the economy of Cyprus’s eastern coastline.
Work on Archived Cases Continues
At the same time, specialists continue processing accumulated paper archives transferred to the organization following reforms to the local government system.
To date, 797 archived cases have been completed. Of these, 387 relate to planning matters and 410 concern building permits.
The processing of legacy files remains one of the organization’s priorities, as it helps gradually eliminate delays that accumulated over previous years.
The EOA of Famagusta emphasizes that efforts to reduce the number of outstanding applications, improve procedural transparency, and further enhance service quality will continue.
Accelerating the licensing process remains one of the organization’s main objectives, as it directly affects regional development and the quality of life of local residents.
