Cypriot authorities have launched a new phase of the large-scale expansion project for Vasiliko Port in the Mari area near Limassol. The Cyprus Ports Authority has announced a tender for consultancy services related to the implementation of the project, which is estimated to cost approximately €350 million. The initiative is regarded as one of the largest infrastructure projects undertaken on the island in recent years and is expected to significantly reshape Cyprus’s role within the transport and energy networks of the Eastern Mediterranean.
What Will Change After the Expansion of Vasiliko Port?
The new project envisages a substantial increase in the port’s capacity and a comprehensive modernization of its infrastructure. During the first phase, engineering solutions, detailed design work, and construction supervision will be carried out.
The Cyprus Ministry of Transport previously stated that the project includes the construction of nine new berths, additional breakwaters, the deepening of the navigation channel to accommodate larger vessels, and the expansion of the surrounding port area. Once all works are completed, the port will be capable of handling approximately five ships per day, equivalent to around 1,770 vessels annually. This will significantly enhance the island’s transport and logistics capabilities.
Why the Project Is Important for Cyprus
Vasiliko Port already plays a strategic role for the country, particularly in the energy sector. The Mari area is considered one of Cyprus’s key energy hubs, hosting energy facilities, terminals, and infrastructure associated with fuel imports and distribution. Experts believe that the modernization of the port will strengthen Cyprus’s position as an important logistics and energy gateway between Europe, the Middle East, and the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean.
Beyond its commercial significance, the project is also viewed as a critical component of national infrastructure. The upgraded port will be capable of supporting not only cargo operations but also energy-related activities, environmental initiatives, and, when necessary, specialised government operations.
The European Union Supports Cyprus’s Modernisation Efforts
Part of the project’s funding will come from the European Union. Nearly €18.8 million has been allocated for the modernization of the port through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), a programme that supports the development of transport and energy infrastructure across EU member states.
The first phase of the project is already estimated to cost approximately €85 million. The remaining funding will be distributed across subsequent stages as the development progresses. EU support demonstrates that the project is considered important not only for Cyprus but also for the wider European transport network.
Cyprus Strengthens Its Regional Role
In recent years, Cyprus has invested heavily in infrastructure development. In addition to port expansion projects, authorities are working on road upgrades, energy initiatives, and improvements to logistics routes. Vasiliko has gained particular importance following extensive discussions surrounding natural gas supply projects and the expansion of energy cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Analysts note that a modernized port could attract new international investment, increase cargo volumes, and create additional employment opportunities. Experts believe that once completed, Vasiliko will become one of Cyprus’s most important infrastructure assets and strengthen the island’s influence throughout the region for many years to come.
