Limassol Tram Proposal Described as Highly Promising

The idea of introducing a tram system in Limassol has received renewed support from the Ministry of Transport. Cyprus Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Evanthia Tsolaki described the project as “very promising”, while stressing that its economic and environmental sustainability must be carefully assessed before any decision is made.

According to the minister, the key criterion should be whether the project is justified in terms of cost and long-term sustainability.

The possibility of creating a tram network is being examined by an interdisciplinary team of specialists from Cyprus and abroad under the leadership of Professor Loukas Dimitriou. The study is being coordinated by the University of Cyprus and Frederick University. The experts were not given a predetermined route or specific solution. Their task is to determine which type of transport system would be best suited to the future needs of Limassol.

More than 30 options and residents’ views

The study is not limited to the idea of laying tram tracks along Limassol’s coastal road. During the first 6 months, specialists collected a large amount of data, including the results of an extensive survey of city residents. In total, the team is examining more than 30 different development scenarios.

According to Professor Dimitriou, there is still no final “yes” or “no” answer regarding the tram. Specialists are currently carrying out technical calculations and assessments. Interestingly, Limassol residents are generally positive about the idea of introducing a tram system in the city. Researchers note that the level of public support was higher than expected.

However, public support alone is not enough to implement a project of this scale. The decision-making process will need to take into account:

  1. expected passenger numbers;
  2. the cost of implementing the project;
  3. operating costs;
  4. the possibility of integrating the tram with other modes of transport;
  5. the impact on the urban environment;
  6. the environmental and financial sustainability of the project.

According to preliminary estimates, construction of the tram infrastructure could require hundreds of millions of euros. The authorities therefore want to understand not only how popular the project is, but also whether it is economically justified.

Why the tram is being discussed as more than just transport

The tram idea has previously been actively promoted by Limassol Mayor Yiannis Armeftis. In his view, the project should be considered not only as a way to improve public transport, but also as a tool for urban regeneration. The mayor has pointed to international experience, noting that some cities with smaller populations than Limassol successfully use tram systems as part of their urban transport policies.

In Limassol, a tram could potentially become part of a broader transformation of city streets, particularly in areas where restrictions on private car traffic are planned and where public space is intended to become more pedestrian- and public transport-friendly. Aktias Street is being considered as one example, with redevelopment plans currently moving forward as part of a new architectural competition. In the future, renovated squares and public spaces could be integrated with the public transport system. The tram is therefore not being considered in isolation, but as a possible part of Limassol’s future urban vision. If specialists conclude that a tram system could operate effectively in Limassol and fit into the city’s long-term transport strategy, the project could move to the next stage.
