Former Café at the Old GSO Site in Limassol to Become a Smart City and Climate Transformation Hub

The Municipality of Limassol has announced the launch of a joint project with the Eratosthenes research center at the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT), under which the former café on the bridge near the old GSO stadium will be given a new purpose.

The building, which has stood vacant for many years, will be transformed into a modern digital InfoPoint—an interactive urban space dedicated to Limassol’s transition to climate neutrality. The project forms part of the city’s participation in the European Mission Cities 2030 initiative. The goal is not only to renovate urban infrastructure, but also to create a symbol of a new stage in Limassol’s development as a city focused on sustainability, technology, and environmental responsibility.

Future Technologies: What Will Be Inside the InfoPoint

The new digital space will combine an exhibition area with an analytical center. The main focus will be on interactive technologies and real-time data visualization. Plans include large video walls, VR and AR systems, interactive displays, and equipment for holographic presentations. The centerpiece will be a city data coordination center—a control room where key indicators of urban life will be displayed.

This will include real-time monitoring of energy consumption, traffic flows, emissions levels, and other environmental parameters. The facility will also feature a compact weather station to continuously track air quality and weather conditions.

Project Budget and Timeline

The total project budget is €800,000. Approximately €450,000 will be allocated to the purchase and installation of high-tech equipment, for which the Eratosthenes research center will be responsible. Another €350,000 will be used to reconstruct and adapt the building for its new functions.

The project is expected to take between 12 and 18 months to complete, after which the InfoPoint will become fully operational and open to residents and visitors.

For Residents and Future Generations

The municipality emphasizes that the new InfoPoint is being created not as a closed analytical center, but as a public space for the community. Special attention is being given to the project’s educational role. Residents of Limassol, including school pupils and university students, will be able to learn about the principles of green urban transformation, explore environmental initiatives, and observe the real-world results of climate policy in an accessible way.

In addition to the permanent exhibition, the venue will host lectures, presentations, and public events focused on sustainable development and innovation in the urban environment.

Part of the Wider Redevelopment of the Old GSO Area

The InfoPoint project is part of a broader transformation of the former GSO stadium district. The site, which was previously partially vacant and underused, is gradually being converted into a multifunctional public space.

A city sports museum is also being developed nearby, while a small snack bar is planned for the lower part of the complex. Together, these initiatives will create a new urban cluster that combines culture, sports, and modern technology.

Limassol and the European Climate Neutrality Mission

Limassol is one of 100 European cities selected to participate in the Mission Cities 2030 programme, funded under Horizon Europe. The initiative has a total budget of approximately €360 million and is aimed at developing solutions to achieve net-zero emissions.

In March 2024, the city received the EU Mission Label—an official recognition from the European Commission that Limassol’s climate neutrality strategy is realistic and ready for large-scale funding. According to programme coordinators, the city’s overall transition to climate neutrality will require around €1.3 billion in investment and includes 30 strategic action areas and approximately 300 projects. Against this backdrop, the future InfoPoint is seen as one of the first visible and tangible steps in Limassol’s large-scale urban transformation.
