Home Solar Panel Shutdowns Are Becoming More Frequent in Cyprus

More and more homeowners in Cyprus are facing an unexpected problem: their residential solar panel systems are being forcibly disconnected from the grid. According to the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC), some solar installations were disconnected up to 17 times in a single month between April 4 and May 4, 2026.

In most cases, solar panels stopped operating almost every other day, and in some instances, disconnections occurred several days in a row. The reason is that electricity production significantly exceeded actual consumption.

Why Solar Panels Are Being Switched Off in Cyprus

The main issue is grid overload. During spring and early summer, Cyprus experiences high levels of solar radiation, while daytime electricity demand remains relatively low. As a result, the grid receives more energy than it can safely absorb.

The Distribution System Operator is forced to temporarily curtail generation to prevent network instability and potential outages. This practice is not unique to Cyprus and is increasingly common across Europe as the number of residential solar systems continues to grow rapidly.

Experts warn that the situation is likely to become more challenging. The number of household solar installations on the island is approaching 100,000, and without infrastructure upgrades, the frequency of disconnections is expected to rise.

What Solar Panel Owners Can Do

Cypriot authorities are encouraging homeowners to switch to a so-called zero export system. Under this setup, solar energy is used exclusively within the home and is not fed back into the public grid.

There are two operating modes. The first completely blocks electricity exports to the grid. The second is more flexible and allows exports only when the electricity network can safely accept additional generation.

However, converting to zero export requires equipment upgrades. Homeowners must install specialized devices and smart meters. The cost of the conversion can reach approximately €500, including installation.

How Significant Are the Financial Losses?

Despite the frequent disconnections, experts say the actual financial losses for most households remain relatively small. According to estimates, if a home consumes around 300 watts per hour during a four-hour shutdown and electricity costs €0.29 per kWh, the loss amounts to approximately €0.34 per curtailment.

Even with repeated restrictions, annual losses generally do not exceed €20. For this reason, many specialists believe that investing in expensive battery systems or converting to zero export is not yet economically justified for most households.

Why the Problem Is Becoming More Serious

Cyprus has been actively expanding renewable energy, and solar panels remain one of the most popular ways to reduce electricity bills. High power prices in recent years have encouraged thousands of residents to install photovoltaic systems.

However, Cyprus operates an isolated electricity grid and still lacks a full interconnection with other European countries. This limits the island’s ability to redistribute excess power.

At the same time, experts increasingly emphasize the need for major investments in grid modernization, energy storage systems, and the Great Sea Interconnector project linking Cyprus, Greece, and Israel. These measures are expected to reduce solar panel shutdowns and improve the long-term stability of the island’s power system.
