The Municipal Museum of National History has opened its doors in the centre of Paralimni, creating a new cultural space that has already become one of the key attractions in the free areas of Famagusta. The museum houses a rare collection of authentic historical artefacts illustrating the centuries-old history of Cyprus and the Greek world. Its opening forms part of the municipality's strategy to develop cultural tourism and preserve the region's historical heritage.
The History of Cyprus Through Authentic Exhibits
The museum's main purpose is to preserve historical memory, introduce residents and visitors to major events of the past, and create a modern educational space for future generations. The exhibition includes unique items from the private collection of retired Admiral Sergios Kerkoullas. The exhibits feature artefacts from various historical periods:
- the Middle Ages;
- the Byzantine period;
- the Greek War of Independence of 1821;
- the Balkan Wars;
- the First and Second World Wars;
- the national liberation struggle of EOKA from 1955 to 1959.
Most of the items are original and hold significant historical and cultural value.

A New Cultural Landmark in Paralimni
The museum is located in the historic centre of Paralimni, making it easy to include in a walking tour of the town. In recent years, the Municipality of Paralimni–Deryneia has been actively investing in public spaces, museums, parks, and tourism infrastructure, with the aim of making the region attractive not only for beach holidays but also for cultural tourism. The museum complements the existing attractions of Cyprus' eastern coast and offers visitors more opportunities to explore the island's history.
The Municipal Museum of National History will appeal to both tourists and residents of Cyprus. Visitors can view rare historical relics, learn more about the events that shaped the island's destiny, and explore the development of Greek and Cypriot statehood over several centuries.
By combining educational, historical, and cultural functions, the museum is gradually becoming an important part of Paralimni's cultural life and another reason to visit the town while travelling around Cyprus.
