The Municipality of :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0} has announced the launch of a major reconstruction project along the inner perimeter of the city moat. Works began on March 30 and are already directly affecting traffic in the city center. The project aims to upgrade road infrastructure, improve building facades, and enhance the overall urban environment.
What has changed since March 30
As part of the works, a section of the road leading from Thermopylae Street to the “OXI” roundabout has been closed to traffic. At the same time, a renovated section of Konstantinou Palaiologou Street—from the “OXI” roundabout to Eleftheria Square—has been reopened. This stretch has already been fully upgraded and is now operational.
However, part of the road on the eastern side of Konstantinou Palaiologou Street remains closed. Restrictions are in place from the intersection with Archbishop Makarios Square to the entrance of the municipal parking area near the Costanza Bastion. Construction work is ongoing here, covering not only roads but also broader infrastructure upgrades.
Scale of reconstruction and city center upgrades
The reconstruction project goes beyond road repairs and includes comprehensive urban improvements. Work is underway to install underground utilities, upgrade sidewalks, and enhance building facades. Plans also include the creation of a modern pedestrian and cycling path along the city walls. This path will connect to a wider network and provide access via elevators to elevated areas.
The project also includes landscaping along the route, viewing platforms, benches, stairways, and an energy-efficient lighting system throughout the area. As a result, central Nicosia is gradually transforming into a more modern and livable urban space.
In addition, restoration work is being carried out on private buildings around the moat. This is an important step, as facade improvements contribute to the overall appearance of the historic center, making it more attractive for residents, tourists, and businesses.
As of 2026, such projects are actively supported by the European Union, as they focus on sustainable urban development, infrastructure improvement, and the preservation of historical heritage.

How traffic has changed
Due to the closures, new traffic schemes have been introduced. Main traffic flows have been redirected via Stasinou Avenue, the Doros Loizou bridge, and the upgraded Konstantinou Palaiologou Street. This helps partially offset the closure of key sections and reduces pressure on the city center.
To exit the old city, drivers now need to use alternative routes through Levkonos, Diogenous, Pireos, Patriarchou Grigoriou, and Agiou Antoniou streets. Access to key locations, including the “OXI” municipal parking area and the city market district, has also been adjusted.
Certain restrictions also apply to heavy vehicles. Due to narrow streets and the risk of congestion, trucks are prohibited from using specific sections to prevent traffic blockages. This is a temporary measure but essential for maintaining safe and smooth traffic flow.
Completion timeline and project significance
According to current plans, the reconstruction project is expected to be completed by October 2026. It is one of the most important infrastructure projects in Nicosia in recent years and is funded with support from the European Union under the “THALEIA 2021–2027” program.
City authorities emphasize that the result will not just be improved roads, but a modern urban space with enhanced infrastructure, better logistics, and a more attractive architectural environment.
The municipality urges residents and visitors to follow temporary road signs and show understanding regarding the restrictions, as all changes are aimed at long-term improvements to the quality of life in Cyprus’s capital.
