Limassol continues to modernize its transport infrastructure. Construction has begun on a second entrance and exit for the Agios Athanasios industrial area, a project expected to significantly improve business safety and ease traffic congestion. The new access road is scheduled for completion within four months and marks an important milestone in the development of one of Cyprus's largest industrial zones.
The project forms part of a broader program to upgrade infrastructure in the island's industrial areas, aimed at improving safety, enhancing logistics, and creating better conditions for businesses.
New Access Road Will Improve Safety for More Than 120 Businesses
According to Entrepreneurial Limassol, around 120 companies employing more than 5,000 people operate in the Agios Athanasios industrial area. Until now, the zone had only one main entrance and exit, a situation that has raised serious concerns among business owners for many years. The construction contract, awarded to AN. Christou Properties and Constructions Ltd, is worth €198,550, while the total project budget is estimated at approximately €250,000.
The new road, approximately 500 meters long, will provide a second entrance and exit to the industrial area. This is particularly important for emergency evacuations and ensuring unrestricted access for emergency services during critical situations. Vasos Demetriades, Chairman of the Agios Athanasios Industrialists Association, said that creating a second access point had long been one of the business community's main demands, as the existing traffic layout did not provide an adequate level of safety.
Only a New Motorway Connection Will Fully Solve Traffic Congestion
The Amathus Municipality considers the construction of the second entrance an important step but stresses that it is only a temporary solution. According to Mayor Kyriakos Xydias, the area's transport problems will only be fully resolved through a new connection between the industrial zone and the motorway, together with the construction of a new north-south arterial road on the eastern side of the district.
Under the current plans, the new road will begin at the coastal highway near the signal-controlled junction by the Pizza Hut restaurant and continue toward the German Medical Institute and the Oncology Centre. This transport link is expected to significantly reduce pressure on the existing road network, improve freight traffic flow, and make business logistics more efficient.

Similar Projects Are Planned for Other Industrial Areas of Limassol
Infrastructure development is not limited to Agios Athanasios. A second entrance is also planned for the Third Industrial Area of Agios Sylas, located within the Municipality of Kourion. Kourion Mayor Pantelis Georgiou announced that the necessary design documentation has already been completed and submitted to the Tenders Board. Construction is expected to begin in 2027 once the tendering procedures have been finalized.
According to the mayor, the Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry has already confirmed funding for the project, allowing preparations to move to the next stage.
At the same time, reconstruction of sidewalks and major road resurfacing are continuing in the Third Industrial Area. Work is currently focused on upgrading pedestrian infrastructure, while new asphalt paving is scheduled to begin within the next two weeks after the current phase is completed.
Cyprus Continues to Modernize Its Industrial Infrastructure
The development of transport infrastructure in industrial areas remains one of the government's priorities. During the annual meeting of the Limassol Chamber of Commerce and Industry, former Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry George Papanastasiou announced that additional entrances and exits for the industrial areas of Agios Athanasios and Ypsonas are scheduled to be built in 2026.
Major infrastructure works are also being prepared for the Monagroulli Industrial and Craft Zone. According to the Department of Public Works, construction of a new road network is expected to begin in late 2026 or early 2027. The project will solve a long-standing access problem, as the road leading to the industrial zone has remained unpaved for many years. Back in December 2025, the tender documentation was completed and approval was obtained from the Limassol Metropolis for the necessary land works, clearing the way for construction to begin once the remaining administrative procedures are finalized.
Experts note that upgrading the transport infrastructure of industrial areas plays a key role in Limassol's continued economic development. Improved logistics, enhanced safety, and shorter transport times make the region more attractive to investors and help create new jobs across Cyprus.
