Industrial Production in Cyprus Continues to Grow

Industrial production in Cyprus remains resilient and continues to be one of the key sectors supporting the construction industry and the country's economy. According to Eurostat, industrial production on the island increased by 2.5% year-on-year in May 2026, despite the overall slowdown in industrial activity across the European Union.

Although production volumes in Cyprus remained unchanged compared with April, the annual figures indicate steady growth. In a country where residential developments, hotels, commercial properties and infrastructure projects are being actively constructed, rising industrial output means stable supplies of building materials, equipment and locally manufactured goods.

Cyprus Outperforms the European Union

Compared with April 2026, industrial production in Cyprus remained unchanged. By comparison:

  1. production increased by 0.1% in April;
  2. by 1.6% in March;
  3. fell by 2.3% in February;
  4. increased by 1.7% in January;
  5. and declined by 1.5% in December 2025.

The year-on-year figures are even stronger:

  1. May 2026 — +2.5%;
  2. April — +1.5%;
  3. March — +2.5%;
  4. January — +4.1%;
  5. February — –1.8%.

Against this backdrop, the situation in Europe appears considerably weaker. Industrial production in the euro area fell by 0.2% in May compared with April, while production across the EU declined by 0.1%. On an annual basis, output decreased by 1.2% in the euro area and by 0.3% in the European Union.

Industrial Growth Supports Cyprus' Construction Sector

In Cyprus, industry is closely linked to the construction sector, which remains one of the main drivers of the economy. New residential neighbourhoods, hotels, business centres, healthcare facilities, schools and transport infrastructure projects are currently under construction across the island. Stable industrial production helps supply the market with building materials, metal structures, engineering equipment and other essential products.

The sector is also supported by government investment in infrastructure, the development of tourism facilities and large-scale urban modernisation projects. All of this helps maintain strong demand for industrial products.

What Is Happening Elsewhere in Europe

  2. in Malta — –3.7%;
  3. in Lithuania — –3.0%.

The strongest increases were recorded in:

  1. Luxembourg — +2.7%;
  2. Hungary — +2.3%;
  3. Poland — +2.0%.

Compared with May 2025, the most significant declines were recorded:

  1. in Ireland — –19.7%;
  2. in Bulgaria — –4.7%;
  3. in Estonia — –3.0%.

The strongest growth was recorded in:

  1. Denmark — +6.5%;
  2. Sweden — +6.5%;
  3. Latvia — +6.2%;
  4. Hungary — +5.4%.

Cyprus' Economy Remains Resilient

Experts note that the steady growth in industrial production confirms the resilience of the Cypriot economy amid challenging conditions in Europe. Despite the high interest rates of recent years and slower economic growth in several EU countries, investment in construction, tourism, real estate and public infrastructure continues across the island.

The construction sector remains one of the main consumers of locally manufactured products. If the current trend continues, industrial production will continue to support the development of the Cypriot economy by creating jobs, encouraging investment and enabling the implementation of major construction projects across the island.
