A major renovation of Heroes Square in the centre of Limassol is scheduled to be completed by mid-June 2026. This was announced by Mayor Yiannis Armeftis. The works were originally expected to finish in early May, but the deadline was extended by about a month due to additional restoration work and technical modifications to the project.
Heroes Square is one of the most iconic public spaces in Limassol. After reconstruction, the area will be completely transformed and will become a more modern and convenient venue for walking and hosting city events.
What Will Change in the Centre of Limassol
The main change in the project is the removal of the old staircases and the creation of a single level surface. This will make the square fully accessible to pedestrians, parents with strollers, and people with reduced mobility.
Special attention has been given to the area around the Rialto Theatre. Reconstruction of the road in front of the building is now nearing completion, and the new layout will improve the connection between the theatre and the square itself. Authorities expect this to make it possible to host concerts, festivals, and open-air cultural events more frequently in the heart of the city.
Additional works include the restoration of historic kiosks that had fallen into disrepair over the years. As these structures have architectural value, the municipality had to coordinate the renovation with relevant authorities. This process was one of the main reasons for the project delay.

Green Areas and Smart Infrastructure
The renovated Heroes Square will be more than just a pedestrian zone; it will become a modern public space with environmentally friendly infrastructure. The project includes a sustainable rainwater management system. A special surface will collect and filter rainwater before directing it into an underground reservoir.
Several green oases will also be created around the historic kiosks. The concept includes next-generation public spaces featuring relaxation areas, playgrounds, landscaped sections, and additional space for cafés and restaurants.
The project was designed by architects Socratis Stratis and Christos Passadakis. Their concept, titled “Square of Everyday Heroes,” won the architectural competition and became part of the sustainable development programme for central Limassol.
Possible Expansion of the Square
The municipality is considering further expansion of the public space toward the Holy Trinity Church. City authorities hope to relocate the church fence in order to nearly double the size of the square and create one unified pedestrian area.
Negotiations with church authorities are ongoing. According to the mayor, the metropolitan office has not issued a final refusal, and the municipality hopes to resume discussions in the coming months. The additional reconstruction would require a further investment of between €400,000 and €500,000.
At present, the total budget for the reconstruction of Heroes Square and the surrounding streets stands at €3.9 million excluding VAT. The project is financed under the European THALIA 2021–2027 programme with support from the European Union.
In recent years, Limassol has been actively upgrading its central districts, focusing on pedestrian infrastructure, green public spaces, and a more comfortable urban environment. Once completed, Heroes Square is expected to become one of the city’s main attractions for both residents and tourists.
