On July 22, the Cabinet of Ministers of Cyprus approved a new subsidy scheme for the installation and replacement of solar water heating systems in residential properties. The "2026 Residential Solar Water Heating Systems Subsidy Scheme" forms part of the government's policy to reduce household energy costs, promote renewable energy sources, and improve energy efficiency. The programme is administered by the Renewable Energy Sources and Energy Conservation Fund.
Cyprus' Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry, Michalis Damianos, said the new scheme encourages residents to install modern solar water heaters or replace outdated systems. According to him, this will help households reduce their electricity bills while increasing the use of solar energy across Cyprus.
Programme Details
The initiative has been allocated a budget of €1 million, with financial support ranging from €500 to €900 per residential property. Most applicants will be eligible for a standard subsidy of €500. Homeowners in mountainous areas may receive €900, while the same amount is also available to vulnerable consumer groups.
Applications will be accepted until December 20, 2026. However, the scheme will close earlier if the limit of 2,000 applications is reached. This condition is expected to be the deciding factor. Experience from previous years suggests that applicants should not delay submitting their documents. The same application cap applied in 2025, and interest in the programme proved to be extremely high. As a result, the allocated budget may be fully committed well before the official application deadline.

Requirements for Receiving the Subsidy
Government support applies only to solar water heating systems that comply with the approved technical standards. In addition, the equipment must be included in the official list of approved products, and installation must be carried out by professionals registered in the government's official register of certified installers.
The Ministry of Energy emphasizes that compliance with these requirements is essential for the proper operation of the programme and significantly reduces the likelihood of an application being rejected. Similar support schemes have been available in Cyprus for several years. The first programme was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers on May 10, 2022. At that time, it had a budget of €600,000, with a standard subsidy of €450 per household, while residents of mountainous areas were eligible for €900. In 2025, funding was increased to €1 million while retaining the 2,000-application limit. Under the 2026 version of the scheme, the standard subsidy has been increased to €500. The programme also provides enhanced financial support for vulnerable groups.
Why the Programme Matters
The new scheme was approved during a period of record demand on the island's electricity system. In July 2026, electricity consumption in Cyprus approached historic highs, and on July 22, rolling power outages began affecting several parts of the country.
Solar water heaters can significantly reduce household electricity consumption because water is heated using solar energy rather than electricity. The authorities say that lowering household electricity costs and reducing pressure on the power grid are among the key objectives of the new programme. Given Cyprus' hot climate and abundance of sunny days, solar water heating systems remain one of the most effective ways to improve a home's energy efficiency while reducing utility bills.
