The implementation process of the second and third phases of the expansion and modernization of Athalassa Hospital has officially been launched. Recently, contracts were signed between the State Health Services Organization (OKYpY) and a contracting company for the preparation of a feasibility study. This step is considered an important milestone in the further development of one of Cyprus’s key medical institutions.
The agreement is set for three months, during which the contractor must prepare a full project viability study. After completion, the document will be submitted to the Ministry of Finance for final approval. If all procedures proceed without delays, a construction tender could be announced as early as this autumn.
What will change: infrastructure upgrades and new treatment standards
The second phase of the project focuses on upgrading existing buildings and gradually replacing outdated structures that are still in use. Many of these facilities do not meet modern safety and comfort standards, which has previously drawn serious criticism from medical staff.
The third phase will form part of a comprehensive plan to fully transform the institution into a modern mental health center. This involves not only construction but also the introduction of new treatment approaches, improved patient conditions, and the creation of a safer working environment for staff.

Reasons for urgent changes: alarming expert findings
It is worth noting that a technical assessment of the buildings, commissioned by OKYpY, was recently published. The report indicated that part of the infrastructure poses risks to both patients and medical staff. These findings sparked public concern and led to active protests from doctors and nurses, who demanded immediate action from the Ministry of Health of Cyprus.
At the end of January, an emergency meeting was held under the leadership of the Minister of Health, during which a decision was made to urgently relocate patients from unsafe wards. Subsequently, authorities arranged for some patients to be accommodated in specially equipped facilities of the Christos and Stella Ioannou Foundation.
The new temporary unit has a capacity of 12 beds and is intended for patients with mental health conditions. This solution has helped ease the burden on older buildings and ensure safer treatment conditions until the large-scale reconstruction is completed.
Outlook: investing in the future of healthcare
The development of Athalassa Hospital is viewed as a strategic project for the entire healthcare system of Cyprus. In recent years, the country has seen increased attention to mental health issues, including the expansion of services, the introduction of digital solutions, and the integration of European treatment standards.
Once all phases of the modernization are completed, the facility is expected to become one of the most advanced psychiatric care centers in the region. This will not only improve the quality of medical services but also increase public trust in the mental health system overall.
