Miltiades Neophytou Engineering Contractors has won the tender for the redevelopment of the Agios Ioannis district in Larnaca. Mayor Andreas Vyras stated that the contract was awarded to the bidder with the lowest financial offer. The municipality is currently observing the mandatory waiting period during which other bidders may file appeals. If no delays arise, initial construction works could begin as early as June or July. However, the mayor noted that the start may be postponed until September after the summer holidays. The contract between the municipality and the contractor is expected to be signed within approximately 30–40 days.
Timeline, budget, and project scope
The signed contract stipulates the full completion of all works within 24 months. The Municipality of Larnaca has already allocated €3,150,000 in its 2026 development budget specifically for this project. The redevelopment plan includes the creation of a central square and smaller public spaces, a complete upgrade of road surfaces and sidewalks, the planting of new trees to increase green areas, and the construction of new parking spaces for residents and visitors. High-quality materials such as granite, concrete paving blocks, and natural stone will be used.

Preserving traditional character
Special attention in the project is given to preserving the traditional character of the historic district. A key objective is to expand urban greenery, improve the microclimate, and promote sustainable mobility. The redevelopment of Agios Ioannis had been delayed for many years due to earlier sewerage works. During those excavation works, significant archaeological findings were discovered beneath the streets, causing additional delays and rescheduling.
It is worth noting that Miltiades Neophytou Engineering Contractors is already carrying out construction work in Larnaca’s commercial center. This involves two contracts: the reconstruction and unification of Acropolis and Alkis squares, and the second phase of street and sidewalk upgrades to improve accessibility for people with disabilities.
Vyras stated that work on both projects is progressing strictly according to schedule. The contractor has confirmed that, barring unforeseen circumstances, the works on Zenonos shopping street, including adjacent alleys, will be fully completed by July 30. As for Acropolis and Alkis squares, the company has committed to delivering the entire project, including part of Ermou shopping street, by June 30. These projects in the heart of the city aim to make central Larnaca more accessible for pedestrians, people with reduced mobility, and tourists.
