The restoration of the old municipal market in the Cypriot village of Athienou has been officially completed, transforming it into a new Multifunctional Cultural Center. The official opening of the new public space is scheduled for Thursday, May 14, 2026, at 7:00 PM. The ceremony will be led by Minister of Interior Constantinos Ioannou on behalf of the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides. This event marks an important milestone for the region, as the building, constructed according to a unique design in the mid-20th century, had remained abandoned and gradually deteriorated for many years.
Citizen Service Center Already Operational
As part of the same event, Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Alexis Vafeades will officially inaugurate the Citizen Service Center, which is housed within the renovated complex. Notably, the office has already begun operating on a trial basis and is successfully providing residents with a wide range of government services. This combination of cultural and administrative functions makes the project unique across Cyprus.
The Architectural Legacy of Neoptolemos Michaelides
Athienou’s old municipal market is considered an outstanding example of innovative architecture. The project was designed in 1949 by the renowned architect Neoptolemos Michaelides. For decades, this site served as the main center of commercial and social life not only for the village itself, but for the wider region as well. Several years ago, the building was officially declared a protected monument, highlighting its historical significance and the urgent need to save this unique structure from irreversible decay.
How the Restoration Was Carried Out: Challenges and Solutions
According to the Municipality of Athienou, the restoration project and the conversion of the market into a cultural center were carried out through the coordinated efforts of the architectural studio “ΑΑ AA&U For Architecture, Art and Urbanism,” led by Socratis Stratis, and the construction company Milonas S & N Constructions Ltd. One of the main challenges was the building’s protected status, which meant that every modification required approval from the Department of Lands and Surveys. Nevertheless, the specialists succeeded in carefully restoring the historical appearance while adapting the interior to meet modern needs.
The total cost of the project amounted to approximately €2.2 million excluding VAT. The state funded 80% of the expenses, while the remaining 20% was covered by the Municipality of Athienou. For a small village, this partnership was a significant achievement, making it possible to realize an ambitious project without overburdening the local budget.
The Multifunctional Cultural Center of Athienou is already welcoming visitors. Inside, there are halls for meetings, exhibitions, and cultural events. A café is expected to open soon, and the local post office will continue operating on site. In addition, the Athienou Municipal Cultural Foundation has finally received a permanent home after many years without its own space for rehearsals and meetings.
A Symbol Returns to Life
As the municipal authorities emphasize, Athienou’s municipal market has always been a symbol of local history and identity. Now, after many years of neglect, it is once again becoming a vibrant place for meetings, creativity, and cultural exchange. Residents and visitors have already expressed positive opinions about the renovated space, and tourist guides are beginning to include the center in routes dedicated to Cyprus’s cultural heritage. The opening in May 2026 promises to become a true celebration for the entire community.
