In Cyprus, a new building of the Institute of Neurology and Genetics has been put into operation, already being called the largest infrastructure project in the institution’s history. This large-scale facility opens a new chapter in the development of biomedical research and innovation on the island, strengthening the country’s position on the international scientific stage.
A new stage for science and medicine
The implementation of the project became possible thanks to funding from the European Investment Bank and the government of Cyprus. This is the first project of this level in which special emphasis has been placed specifically on supporting scientific research, which is of strategic importance for the country’s development.
The new building, with an area of about 11 thousand m2, is fully ready for operation and equipped with state-of-the-art technology. It houses modern laboratories, lecture halls, and research spaces that meet the standards of leading global scientific centers. The architectural concept takes into account both current medical needs and future challenges in healthcare and genetics.
Modern infrastructure and new opportunities
The complex is located next to the existing institute building in the Agios Dometios area in Nicosia and is connected to it by a convenient passage. Inside, there are diagnostic departments with MRI and computed tomography, research laboratories, office spaces, areas for students and postgraduates, as well as rooms for lectures and scientific events.
Special attention has been given to creating a comfortable environment for scientists and students: the building includes both enclosed and open public spaces, which promotes knowledge exchange and the development of the scientific community. The total cost of the project is estimated at approximately 19.4 million euros, making it one of the largest investments in Cyprus’s scientific infrastructure in recent years.

Impact on education and international cooperation
The launch of the new facility already opens additional opportunities for attracting international research projects and students. It is expected that the number of postgraduate students will grow, and the institute itself will become an even more attractive partner for leading universities and scientific organizations in Europe and worldwide.
According to the institute’s Chief Executive and Medical Director Leonidas Phylactou, this project is significant not only for the institution but for the entire country. The new infrastructure creates conditions for a major breakthrough in research, the ultimate goal of which remains improving patients’ quality of life.
Cyprus strengthens its position in biomedicine
The commissioning of the building strengthens the status of the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics as a center of excellence and a key player in biomedical research in the region. In the context of global competition for scientific talent and innovation, such projects become an important factor in economic and technological development.
Today, Cyprus is actively investing in science and education, aiming to become a regional hub for research and high technologies. The new institute building is not just a structure, but a symbol of a long-term strategy aimed at developing the medicine of the future and implementing innovations that will benefit every resident of the country.
