We have already walked several neighborhoods in Larnaca (Mackenzie, Drosia, Skala) and the Finikoudes embankment.

Now let's pause on the study of the regions and talk about what you cannot live without in any of them. We'll talk about grocery stores.

We will learn about chain stores, the largest grocery hypermarkets, and small kiosks!

Hypermarkets

Let's talk about hypermarkets first. In Greek, big stores are called υπεραγορά /iperagora/ or σούπερμάρκετ /supermarket/, that is, a calque/loan of the English hypermarket and supermarket. However, most locals (both Greek Cypriots and British) simply call the name of the store.

NB! All information in the article is relevant for the spring of 2021.

Alphamega / Αλφαμέγα

Alphamega is a Cypriot retail chain that has been operating on the island since 1958. At the moment, there are 18 stores in Cyprus, three of which are located in Larnaca and her suburbs:

Opening hours of "Alfamega" (all shops in Larnaca and the suburbs):

  • Monday: 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Tuesday: 7 am-9pm
  • Wednesday: 7am to 9pm
  • Thursday: 7am to 9pm
  • Friday: 7 am to 9 pm
  • Saturday: 7am to 9pm
  • Sunday: 9am to 9pm.

On holidays (or during coronavirus restrictions), store opening times may vary!

What does Alphamega offer? Large selection of products! And besides that they have goods for the house, children and pets. Also Alphamega is the exclusive representative of the most famous British chain of stores Tesco.

One of the advantages is that food can be ordered to your home directly on the website.

Sklavenitis (Sklavenitis / Σκλαβενίτης)

Sklavenitis / Σκλαβενίτης

Sklavenitis is a Greek retail chain named after its founder. At the moment, there are about 500 stores in Greece and Cyprus, one of which is located in the center of Larnaca, and another is in Dromolaksia.

Opening hours of Sklavenitis (Larnaca):

  • Monday: 8am to 9pm
  • Tuesday: 8am to 9pm
  • Wednesday: 8am to 9pm
  • Thursday: 8 am-9pm
  • Friday: 8 am-9pm
  • Saturday: 8am to 9pm
  • Sunday: 10am to 9pm.

Opening hours of Sklavenitis (Dromolaksia):

  • Monday: 7.30am to 9pm
  • Tuesday: 7.30am to 9pm
  • Wednesday: 7.30am to 9pm
  • Thursday: 7.30am to 9pm
  • Friday: 7.30am to 9pm
  • Saturday: 7.30am to 9pm
  • Sunday: 10am to 6pm.

On holidays (or during coronavirus restrictions), store opening times may vary!

In addition to food, Sklavenitis also offers household goods and basic necessities.

The good news is that they have their website. The bad one is that it is still empty :-) However, given that their division in Greece is now actively developing their website and delivery service, it is possible that by the time you read the article, you will also be able to actively shop online.

Lidl

Lidl is the popular German store chain. To date, Lidl has captured the markets of almost all countries of the European Union. As is typical of the European network, it is filled not only with local products, but also with goods from other EU countries.

There are many frozen and ready-to-eat foods that the northerners love so much.

There are three stores in Larnaca and the suburbs:

Opening hours "Lidl" (all shops in Larnaca and the suburbs):

  • Monday: 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Tuesday: 7 am-9pm
  • Wednesday: 7am to 9pm
  • Thursday: 7am to 9pm
  • Friday: 7 am to 9 pm
  • Saturday: 7am to 9pm
  • Sunday: 8am to 9pm.

On holidays (or during coronavirus restrictions), store opening times may vary!

You can see the products on their site.

SPAR

SPAR is also represented in Larnaca, in the neighborhood of Drosia.

Unlike its German counterparts, SPAR (originally a Dutch company) does have home delivery! But... their website is not yet at the same level as of Alphamega.

SPAR opening hours:

  • Monday: 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Tuesday: 7 am to 9 pm
  • Wednesday: 7am to 9pm
  • Thursday: 7am to 9pm
  • Friday: 7 am to 9 pm
  • Saturday: 7am to 9pm
  • Sunday: 9am to 9pm.

On holidays (or during coronavirus restrictions), store opening times may vary!

Metro

Oh, seems there is another German chain of stores? No.

Metro is a Larnaca company, which today is represented in many parts of the island. In Larnaca, Metro is located in the city center.

Metro opening hours:

  • Monday: 7.30am to 9pm
  • Tuesday: 7.30am to 9pm
  • Wednesday: 7.30am to 9pm
  • Thursday: 7.30am to 9pm
  • Friday: 7.30am to 9pm
  • Saturday: closed
  • Sunday: closed.

On holidays (or during coronavirus restrictions), store opening times may vary!

They have a website. And there is much more information.

A small bonus! Two more shops in Larnaca.

Stelios / Στέλιος

Stelios is a real gift for those who live in Livadia or in the Oroklini-Pyla (i.e. Dhekelia tourist zone).

This is the cheapest store in Larnaca (they even say that in the whole of Cyprus). People even come from Nicosia to shop here. True, it is worth noting a significant minus - you can get to it without a personal car, but it will take a lot of time.

Opening hours of Stelios:

  • Monday: 7 am to 8 pm
  • Tuesday: 7 am to 8 pm
  • Wednesday: 7 am to 8 pm
  • Thursday: 7 am to 8 pm
  • Friday: 7 am to 8 pm
  • Saturday: 7 am to 8 pm
  • Sunday: 9 am to 7 pm.

On holidays (or during coronavirus restrictions), store opening times may vary!

Agrotis / Αγρότης

Agrotis is a relatively large store near the old hospital (in the center of Larnaca).

Αγρότης means "farmer". In the store you can find a relatively large selection of products, vegetables and fruits, as well as essential goods.

Working hours "Agrotis":

  • Monday: 7.30 am to 8 pm
  • Tuesday: 7.30am to 8pm
  • Wednesday: 7.30am to 8pm
  • Thursday: 7.30am to 8pm
  • Friday: 7.30am to 8pm
  • Saturday: 7.30am to 8pm
  • Sunday: 9 am to 7 pm.

On holidays (or during coronavirus restrictions), store opening times may vary!

The advantage of the store is its convenient location, near a large bus stop and within walking distance from Finikoudes.

Cyprus - Island of kiosks

Of course, the above shops are not enough for a 140 thousand urban population. Larnaca, like any other city in Cyprus, is full of kiosks. However, this is not exactly what you may think.

Kiosk (or περίπτερο in Greek) is much larger than the kiosk stalls some are used to. This is a small shop, a convenience store, a corner store, a bodega (if you are from NYC) which residents of neighboring houses visit to buy something they forgot to buy in a big store. This is called 'kiosk' here.

There are kiosks in the tourist districts. In addition to food, they have everything a tourist might need - from sunscreen to swimming trunks. There are kiosks in the bedroom suburbs, there are even ethnic kiosks! Russian, Filipino, Bulgarian.

Advice. The easiest place to buy a SIM card is a kiosk. They can be purchased without being registrated on your passport/ID, after a certain time (if you do not top up your balance), it is canceled.

You have only to type the word kiosk on Google Maps, and a big kingdom of these shops will immediately appear:

What is your nearest store?

We have talked a little about chain grocery stores and kiosks. Now we will help you find the shops closest to where you are staying. Let's start from the center.

If you are staying in hotels on Finikoudes or not far from it, then the nearest store to you (which can be reached by walk) is Agrotis. Google it and go. You can also quickly reach Spar and Metro by car.

In Skala and Mackenzie, as already mentioned, there is a problem to find grocery stores. The easiest way is to get to the nearest Alphamega, Spar or Metro by car.

If you are in Meneou, then you have Lidl nearby. The Alphamega is located in Kiti.

In the "old" bedroom suburbs, as you might guess, it is good with large hypermarkets: in Drosia there are Spar, Alphamega, and also Kritikos. In Aradippou, in addition to Lidl, there are local hypermarkets Spyros and Mas Alampritis. For Ayii Anargyri (first or second), the closest will be Sklavenitis.

By the way, there is a grocery store Prinos near Sklavenitis in the city center. It is also worth a visit.

For Livadia, as well as Oroklini and Pyla (this is the coastal part where a significant part of tourists stay), there are two options: drive along Dhekelia to Lidl or even Sklavenitis, or go to Livadia in Stelios. There are also Kritikos in the center of Oroklini village.

Delivery

As you know, Cyprus is not the most developed edge of the Earth. Here, many inventions of civilization (like paying by phone, mobile banking, fast internet) arrive with a noticeable delay. However, delivery services are starting to develop actively on the island! Especially during this pandemic.

How to order food? Of course, food can be ordered on the website of some of the hypermarkets mentioned above. You can also contact intermediaries, for example: Foody.

What else?

Of course, this is not the entire list of shops that you can find in Larnaca. There are excellent fruit and vegetable stores (like the aforementioned Prinos), there are fish shops with fresh seafood (e.g. the fish market in Skala). Yes, Larnaca (and the surrounding area) has its own traditional markets and other places for selling rural products. And, of course, large and small non-grocery stores. Also huge chain stores or small "home-made" workshops.
