The Kamares area of Larnaca is a combination of historical heritage and modern amenities that attracts locals and tourists alike. Known for its historic aqueduct and picturesque views, this small neighbourhood is a unique place to live and relax.
Location and Key Features
Kamares is located southwest of the centre of Larnaca, close to the Larnaca Salt Lake. Its magnificent hills, like comfortably curled up sleeping cats, create an atmosphere of serenity and spaciousness. The shortest distance to the Mediterranean Sea is approximately 4-6 kilometres. A shopping centre, cinema and sports complex are within walking distance.
The name "Kamares" has its roots in Greek and is related to the aforementioned historic aqueduct. "Kamares (Καμάρες) means "arches" or "vaults" in Greek. The aqueduct was active until the beginning of the 20th century and remains a symbol of the region's engineering and cultural heritage.

Compared to Larnaca, the district is tiny. But with all your soul you feel the space and relaxation of the city's hustle and bustle. There are few skyscrapers and the sky is starry and clear. The average number of floors is 4-5. There are panoramic views of fields and mountains from the windows.
Everything you need is close by. For me personally, it is the cinema, but my friends are delighted with the services of Larnaca General Hospital, and even more with the AEK Arena and the city's only major shopping centre, Metropolis.
When we talk about mountains in relation to Larnaca, we mean views like these. In winter the fields are smart and bright green, in summer the grass is scorched by the merciless sun. As a reminder, the real mountains are closer to Troodos, closer to the neighbourhood of Agios Athanasios. Below is the famous Aqua Gym sports centre, where you can restore your health with water gymnastics classes from the best instructors in the city.
On the right is the Kition sports centre. It is used for private training as well as major international championships.
And just above is the AEK Arena - Georgios Karapatakis Football Stadium. Built in 2016, it is the home stadium of AEK Larnaca and has a total capacity of 8,058. From 2021 it will also be the home stadium of the Cyprus national team.
Matches are usually played in the evenings and it's a great way to spend the day with the family. During the day, you can escape the heat in the neighbourhood's small green spaces, where you can walk your child or even a small dog. There are no special dog parks here yet.
In the evenings, children play in the playground.
Legends and facts
The main attraction of the neighbourhood is the aqueduct built in 1746 by the Ottoman governor Beker Pasha to supply the city with water. It was a 10-kilometre-long, complex engineering structure with numerous arches that brought water from the mountain springs to Larnaca. The aqueduct still attracts the attention of tourists and historians as an important element of cultural heritage.
Legend has it that the aqueduct was built with the help of the locals and the use of voluntary labour. Beker Pasha, realising the importance of this project in improving the quality of life in Larnaca, organised the construction with the help of the local people, which created a special attitude among the population.
It is also believed that the Kamares Aqueduct was not only a practical solution for the water supply of the whole city, but also a symbol of the power and prosperity of the region, showing how architectural beauty could be combined with functionality.
