6 Delightful Places in Nicosia Where Vegetarians Will Be Full and Happy

When people talk about Cyprus, they immediately think of souvlaki or kleftiko. Local cuisine is indeed famous for meat, but that does not mean vegetarians have nothing to do here. Personally, I believe Mediterranean cuisine is one of the best when it comes to plant-based food: olives, fresh vegetables, halloumi cheese, herbs — all of this offers incredible room for creativity. The problem lies elsewhere: many Cypriot taverns do not make much effort and offer only Greek salad on the menu. Boring, right?

But Nicosia is a pleasant exception. In recent years, many places have opened in the capital where vegetarians are treated with respect, and the food is prepared so well that you may not even believe it contains no meat. I know at least seven places in the capital where vegetarian food is not a compromise, but a true celebration of taste. You will not leave hungry — on the contrary, you will discover new sides of Mediterranean cuisine.

Silver Pot: Bohemian Chic and a Thai Mood

Silver Pot has been operating in Nicosia since 2011. Locals love this place, and that is the best sign of quality. Just keep one thing in mind: lunchtime here is extremely busy. If you arrive at half past twelve, you may have to wait. It is better to come either before noon or after two in the afternoon to be sure of finding a free table in this bohemian atmosphere.

Random tourists rarely wander in here — it is mostly regulars who come. The atmosphere of Silver Pot feels like a small café in Soho: relaxed, creative, and very warm. Despite the daily changing menu, the venue has its own “bestsellers” that are always available. First of all, there is Thai curry — aromatic, with the right balance of coconut milk and spices — as well as falafel burgers. If you want something lighter, pay attention to their signature salads. They are dressed with homemade hummus with cumin and chickpeas — a true symphony of flavor that turns a simple appetizer into a full meal. On Saturdays, brunch is served here, and many critics consider it one of the best in the city, with pancakes, French toast, and omelets made from free-range eggs.

D.O.T.: European Gloss Near Famagusta Gate

Just a few steps from Inga’s Veggie Heaven, near Famagusta Gate, you will find another gastronomic gem — D.O.T. Restaurant. This place immediately catches the eye with its refined style: vintage décor, Parisian music that creates a unique mood, and a menu that changes almost every season. The cuisine is international, with strong Greek and Cypriot influences, but presented in a modern and very elegant way.

D.O.T. is a real find for people with different dietary preferences: vegans, vegetarians, and those avoiding gluten are treated with equal care here. Their poached eggs deserve special attention. They are served on multigrain or quinoa bread with avocado and seasonal vegetables — a dish that has become the venue’s signature. Lunches and dinners at D.O.T. are very popular, but the true star is weekend brunch. It is so delicious that it creates queues.

One important detail: tables cannot be booked on weekends. Fortunately, the turnover is fairly quick, and the short wait is worth it. This is an ideal place for a romantic lunch or a leisurely weekend breakfast.

The Gym: Bread, Music, and a Social Scene

Hearing the name The Gym, you might think it is a strict fitness bar with protein shakes, but that is not the case, although the cocktails here are excellent too. The Gym is one of Nicosia’s trendiest restaurants, known for its relaxed atmosphere and amazing baked goods. Walking along Onasagorou Street, you will likely catch the tempting aroma of freshly baked bread before you even see the sign or hear the lively rhythms coming from inside.

The Gym’s cuisine focuses on fresh local produce, and the kitchen knows how to surprise even sophisticated guests. The menu is designed to please everyone: vegetarians, vegans, and those looking for gluten-free dishes will all find something to enjoy. It is an ideal place for a late breakfast, brunch, lunch, or dinner with friends. When the sun goes down, the restaurant turns into a fashionable bar with an excellent cocktail list. The Gym is chosen by those who want to be at the center of events, enjoy live music — vinyl records are not uncommon here — and eat delicious modern food.

Syrian Arab Friendship Club Restaurant: Middle Eastern Abundance

If you miss bright spices, juicy herbs, and unforgettable flavors of Lebanon and Syria, head straight to the Syrian Arab Friendship Club Restaurant. This is one of those hidden gems that locals tend to keep secret from tourists.

The menu here is huge — truly enormous — with dozens of vegetarian options. And believe me, the difficulty will not be finding meat-free food, but stopping yourself from ordering too much. The atmosphere is very family-friendly, and the hospitality is excellent. Crispy falafel, refreshing fattoush salad with toasted pieces of pita, aromatic hummus, baked eggplant with pomegranate sauce — this is only a small part of what you can try. The fresh, thin Arabic bread, baked right here before your eyes, deserves a special mention. The restaurant has a large garden, making it ideal for a family lunch with children who need space to play.

The Cookshop: A Shop-Restaurant with Homemade Pickles

The Cookshop is the kind of place you want to keep secret, but I cannot resist sharing it. Imagine a country-style café: wooden tables, shelves lined with jars of pickles, and chairs from different eras standing in the corners. Cozy, like a grandmother’s house. It is located on a busy street, but as soon as the door closes, the city noise disappears.

What makes it special? They make almost everything themselves. Cheeses, jams, marinades, sun-dried tomatoes, pickles — no preservatives, no artificial additives. If you love quality products, you will understand. Their homemade graviera cheese is tender, nutty, and melts in your mouth. The pickled vegetables are so crunchy that you will want to buy a jar to take home. And you can: the restaurant’s boutique sells these delicacies when they are available.

For lunch, you can order a plate with several types of appetizers: pickles, olive pâté, a slice of homemade cheese, and fresh bread. Perfect when you want a bite without overeating. Or try their salad with roasted vegetables — sweet pepper, zucchini, eggplant, and a touch of balsamic. Simple, but so delicious that you completely forget about meat.

Pantopolio Kali Orexi: Gourmet Delights for Food Lovers

I want to finish this guide with a place that proves vegetarian food can be refined. Pantopolio Kali Orexi is a restaurant people visit for dates and special occasions. The interior is elegant, the tables are covered with white tablecloths, but there is no stiffness. In summer, the garden opens, and dinner outdoors becomes a real event.

The chef is a magician. His halloumi ravioli is one of the best dishes I have tried in Nicosia. Thin pasta, melted salty cheese inside, and sage butter on top. One bite, and you close your eyes with pleasure. Fava — a yellow pea dip — is not just a purée here, but a true work of art with extra virgin olive oil and sweet onions. And the graviera in filo pastry is fantastic: a crispy shell with warm, stretchy, spicy cheese inside.

I usually order meze, a selection of appetizers. Many small plates arrive: olives, cheeses, vegetable patties, roasted peppers. It feels like a small gastronomic journey, where every five minutes brings a new flavor. Even meat-eaters leave satisfied — no one regrets the absence of meat on the plate here. Because vegetables, cheese, and dough in skilled hands can easily outshine any steak.

One Last but Important Tip

One important final tip. In Cyprus, there is still a common misconception that fish and seafood also count as fasting or vegetarian food. Many places, especially traditional taverns, may automatically include fish in a vegetarian menu, considering it a good alternative to meat. So if you do not eat fish, always clarify this directly with the waiter. Say: “I don’t eat meat or fish.” This will save you from awkward situations and ensure you get exactly the dish you expect.

Vegetarian cuisine in Cyprus is only gaining momentum, but it is already widespread enough to satisfy even the most demanding guest. Use our guide so that every lunch or dinner in Nicosia is not just a way to satisfy hunger, but a bright, delicious, and unforgettable adventure.
