The second phase of the comprehensive redevelopment of Zygi’s central area will begin in 2026. The Ministry of Interior, through the Larnaca District Administration, has already announced a tender for construction works with a total value of approximately €2 million. The project is co-financed by the European THALIA program and is expected to significantly transform the appearance of the coastal community.
According to published information, the contractor will be selected in February 2026, after which the active construction phase will begin. The main focus will be on upgrading public spaces and improving the overall quality of the urban environment.
A Modern Space and Greater Comfort for Residents
The project includes resurfacing roads, laying new pavements, installing modern street lighting and urban furniture, and relocating utility networks underground. Special attention will be given to the creation of green areas and leisure spaces, making Zygi’s center more convenient and attractive for both residents and visitors.
The redevelopment is aimed not only at visual improvement but also at enhancing functionality, safety, and ease of movement within public areas.
Sports Infrastructure and Active Leisure
Alongside the town center upgrade, construction of sports facilities for football, volleyball, and basketball will begin in early 2026. The project is valued at approximately €457,000. These facilities form part of a broader strategy to promote an active lifestyle and create opportunities for young people and families.

Seafront Upgrade and New Tourism Opportunities
Works on the reconstruction of the coastal road, with a budget of around €1.7 million, are already underway and are scheduled for completion by August 2026. This project will significantly improve accessibility and the visual appeal of the seafront, enhancing the area’s tourism potential.
Maritime Museum as a New Point of Interest
Special focus is also being placed on the Fishing and Maritime Museum, whose building has already been completed but remained closed for a long time due to a lack of funding for interior fittings. Zygi authorities, in cooperation with European institutions, are working to secure approximately €150,000 for exhibition design and technical equipment.
Once opened, the museum will showcase traditional fishing boats, nets, tools, and artifacts linked to the region’s maritime heritage. It is expected to become an important cultural landmark and an additional tourist attraction.
Investing in the Future of Cyprus’s Coastal Communities
The projects in Zygi reflect Cyprus’s broader strategy for the sustainable development of coastal settlements, with a strong focus on quality of life, tourism, and the preservation of local identity. The implementation of all planned initiatives is expected to transform Zygi into a modern, comfortable, and economically attractive destination for both residents and visitors to the island.
