Where Will Smart Meters Be Installed in Cyprus in March?

The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) has announced the continuation of a large-scale program to install “smart” electricity meters in all districts of the island. The work will be carried out throughout March and will be part of a long-term strategy to modernize the national energy system and digitalize electricity consumption management.

The project covers the largest cities of Cyprus and is being implemented simultaneously in several regions, highlighting the ambitious nature of the reform. The new smart meters will allow consumers to monitor electricity consumption more accurately, while energy companies will be able to manage network loads more efficiently.

Where the work is taking place in Nicosia

In the capital of Cyprus, the installation of equipment in March will take place in the central part of Nicosia, as well as in the Agios Dometios area and around the Horse Racing area. The work will affect both sides of Demokratias Avenue, the sections between Grigoris Afxentiou, Vasileos Pavlou, Argirokastrou, Agios Pavlos streets, up to the “green” line. These areas are characterized by mixed residential and commercial development, which makes modernization particularly important for the stability of electricity supply.

Limassol: city center and historic districts

In Limassol, the main focus in March will be on the Katholiki area. The replacement of meters will cover a significant part of the streets of the historic and administrative center. For Limassol, where business districts and residential complexes are actively developing, the introduction of intelligent metering systems is an important step toward creating modern energy infrastructure.

Larnaca and the free areas of Famagusta: modernization in tourist zones

In Larnaca, the program extends to areas on both sides of Archbishop Makarios III Avenue — from Grigoris Afxentiou Street to the roundabout near the port. The work will also cover the zones between Tassos Papadopoulos and Spyros Kyprianou avenues. These areas include both residential neighborhoods and commercial properties, which makes modernization especially relevant amid growing energy consumption.

In the free areas of Famagusta, the installation will be concentrated in the center of Ayia Napa on both sides of Tevkrou Anthia and Kataspilon streets. Considering the high tourist load during the summer season, updating the electricity metering system will help increase the reliability of supply and improve response to peak loads.

Paphos: upgrades in the city center

In Paphos, the replacement of meters in March will affect the Agios Pavlos area, covering an extensive network of streets in the central part of the city. Paphos, as one of the key tourist and residential centers of the island, also requires a stable and technologically advanced energy system.

Short-term outages and long-term benefits

The EAC emphasized that replacing each meter requires a short-term electricity shutdown, which usually does not exceed twenty minutes. The company apologized to residents for possible inconvenience, noting that the modernization of the network will bring long-term benefits.

Smart meters are part of a broader strategy for the energy transformation of Cyprus. Amid rising electricity prices and the transition to renewable energy sources, digital metering is becoming a key element of efficient resource management. The new system will allow the introduction of flexible tariffs, accelerate fault detection, and improve billing transparency for consumers.

The modernization of Cyprus’s energy grid reflects the country’s overall course toward infrastructure digitalization and increased resilience to energy challenges. The implementation of the smart meter installation program is an important step toward a more modern and environmentally friendly energy future for the island.
