When Will Renovation of Larnaca’s Old Hospital Finally Begin?

The transformation of Larnaca’s old hospital into a modern building for the local municipality is being delayed once again. Although the staff of the state medical organization OKYPY have already vacated the premises, employees of the state sanitary services are still on site. They were originally expected to leave by the end of the year, but due to the lack of a suitable alternative location, the deadline has been pushed to early January 2026. According to the Ministry of Health, the sanitary services will be temporarily relocated to one of the trade union SEK’s facilities.

Decisions expected by the end of the year

Larnaca Mayor Andreas Vyras stated that the matter will be brought before the municipal council before the year’s end in order to approve the final project timeline. The construction contract has been signed, and the tender validity has been extended several times to avoid restarting the entire process. Funding for the works is secured through a European Investment Bank loan arranged via the Ministry of Finance. The total cost of renovation and reconstruction is estimated at around €9 million.

Why the project is frozen again

Construction was initially planned to begin back in 2024, but the schedule has been repeatedly postponed. The reason is the need to completely vacate the building of all government services. In September 2025, OKYPY transferred its staff to a new wing of the Larnaca General Hospital, but the sanitary services never moved—this issue is the key factor preventing the start of works.

How the building will change after reconstruction

According to the approved plan, the former hospital site will be transformed into a modern administrative centre for Larnaca, while respecting the historical character of the building. The original 1934 structures will undergo careful restoration, while the later northern extensions will be demolished. New buildings will be constructed in their place, designed in an architectural style that harmonises with the historical façades.

All structures will be connected by a two-storey glass-covered walkway, creating a unified space. The surrounding area will feature a spacious city square with greenery, water elements, a garden zone, modern lighting, and new fencing. The project prioritises accessibility and environmental sustainability.

After completion, all municipal departments of Larnaca—currently scattered across various locations and partially housed in an old tower block on the Finikoudes seafront—will relocate to the new complex. It will serve as the city’s unified administrative centre and become an architectural symbol of the revitalisation of Larnaca’s historic core. Active construction is expected to begin as soon as the sanitary services vacate the building, with completion anticipated between late 2027 and 2028, pending final confirmation by the municipality.
