The Ministry of the Interior of Cyprus has announced a special procedure for restoring passports and identity cards for Limassol residents whose documents were destroyed or damaged by the devastating forest fires in July 2025. This measure is part of a state support package approved by the Council of Ministers for those affected.
The new measure provides for the free replacement of existing documents, without any fees. This applies to both Cypriot citizens and permanent residents living in the affected areas.
How to restore your passport or ID card after a fire
The restoration process is as simple as possible and follows the standard procedure for lost or damaged documents. First, the victim must report the damaged passport or ID card to the local police station. The police will then issue an official document (Form 235) confirming that the document has been lost or damaged.
With this certificate, the citizen applies to the Limassol District Administration for the reissue of documents. According to the government's decision, no state fees or charges will be levied for reissuing documents in these cases.
Humanitarian support and administrative simplification
This measure is part of a broader campaign to support citizens affected by natural disasters. The Cypriot government emphasizes that it seeks to compensate for material damage and ensure citizens quickly regain access to basic documents and services, including banking, medical care, and social assistance.
As of late July 2025, several rural communities in the Limassol area remain partially evacuated. The fires caused significant damage to infrastructure, private homes, and property. The state budget has allocated tens of millions of euros for the reconstruction of the affected areas, and families who have lost their homes have received financial support.
The Ministry urges prompt action
The Ministry of the Interior urges those affected to replace their documents promptly, especially if they have been completely destroyed. A valid passport or identity card is required to receive other forms of assistance and confirm your status as a Cyprus resident and citizen.
