Two New Museums to Open in the Historic Center of Paphos

A large-scale project worth €1.86 million has been launched in the very heart of Paphos. By 2026, the city will welcome two new museums: the George C. Tornaritis Museum of Natural History and Art and the Multi-Thematic Museum, both set to become major cultural attractions of Cyprus.

A New Impulse for the Heart of Paphos

The future museums will be housed in the former warehouses of Matheos Charalambides. Construction works are scheduled to begin on October 1 and finish by the end of May 2026, after which the installation of exhibitions will begin. According to Mayor Phedonas Phedonos, this project will not only preserve historical architecture but also breathe new life into the city, turning Paphos into a center of cultural tourism rather than just a beach destination.

Architecture and Heritage Preservation

Project architect Andreas Vardas emphasized that special attention is being paid to the restoration of historic buildings and the creation of spaces for education and creativity. He noted that delays in implementing the project could have led to the loss of unique historical structures, which will now be given a second life.

Tourism Development and Urban Infrastructure

As part of this cultural upgrade, Paphos is preparing other major transformations. New student residences and four boutique hotels with a total of 170 rooms are already under construction. In addition, the modernization of the city’s central shopping quarter is scheduled for 2026. These initiatives aim to attract more tourists, students, and researchers, while also creating jobs and boosting the regional economy.

Museums of the Future – Spaces for All Generations

Chief engineer Savvas Georgiou highlighted that the new museums will become centers of knowledge, creativity, and scientific research. Their mission is to unite past and present, shaping the cultural foundation for future generations.

Already recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its archaeological monuments and mosaics, Paphos will further strengthen its status as one of the leading cultural destinations of the Mediterranean with the opening of these new museums.
