A new waterfront will appear in Limassol

Work has begun on the modernisation of Aktea, one of Limassol's key coastal streets. This was recently announced by the city council. The project is estimated to cost €397,000 (excluding VAT). It is part of a long-term strategy to enhance the urban environment and improve quality of life on the Limassol coast.

The renovation of the waterfront will improve quality of life

According to an official press release from Limassol City Council, the renovation will cover the area from the new marina to Alexandria Street. The local authorities plan to completely renovate the coastal area, creating a comfortable urban environment and improving conditions for pedestrians and cyclists.

The project includes the creation of a 1,050-metre-long, 4.5-metre-wide pilot pedestrian and bicycle route, along which autonomous street lighting with motion sensors (all-in-one technology), benches, litter bins and street design elements will be installed, and trees and shrubs will be planted.

Connecting urban areas and sustainable development

One of the project's key objectives is to connect the Tsiflikoudia and Agios Ioannis areas with central Limassol and the coastal area. This will help create a more connected and integrated urban structure. Additionally, the redevelopment aims to revitalise a previously neglected part of the city, transforming it into a safe, modern, and attractive space for residents and tourists alike.

Environmental sustainability is a key consideration, and the project will use sustainable building materials, including innovative reflective road surfacing (cool pavement). This reduces surface temperatures during hot weather, combats the urban heat island effect, and improves the coastal microclimate.

Improving accessibility and developing carbon-free mobility

The renovated Aktea Street will be much more convenient for getting around and will look great too. The current problems, such as damaged pavements, unsafe pavements and poor accessibility for people with disabilities, will be addressed. During the works, the municipality also intends to reduce residents' dependence on private cars by encouraging them to cycle and walk more.

This will make an important contribution to sustainable urban mobility development and CO2 emission reduction, which is particularly relevant in the context of Cyprus' climate policy and the Limassol 2030 strategy.

The first phase of the project has already begun and, according to the local authorities, it will last for two months. Once the large-scale reconstruction is complete, Aktea Street will symbolise sustainable development in Limassol, setting an example for modern, environmentally friendly, accessible urban environments in Cyprus.
