The Limassol municipality has begun discussing a large-scale project to create a modern park that could become the city’s largest green area. Mayor Yiannis Armeftis proposed expanding the Polemidia forest park in the Agia Fyla area by incorporating adjacent territories that are currently used by a recruits’ training center.
The area in question ranges from 40 to 50 thousand m2, which, according to the municipality, can be integrated into the future mega park. Plots that are potentially unused by the Ministry of Defense have already been identified, and the relevant maps have been submitted for consideration by state authorities.
Space for life and recreation
The main idea of the project is not simply to increase the area of green spaces, but to create a full-fledged urban infrastructure for recreation. The authorities want to transform the area around the existing park into a modern public space where residents can walk, exercise, and spend time in nature.
Today, such projects are becoming especially relevant for rapidly growing cities. Limassol is actively developing, and the pressure on the urban environment is increasing, so the expansion of green areas is seen as a strategic necessity to improve the quality of life.
Negotiations and international experience
Contacts with the Ministry of Defense are still preliminary; however, the authorities expect a positive decision. In global practice, there are often cases where military facilities located within urban development are gradually relocated outside the city, freeing up space for public needs.
At the same time, negotiations are underway with the Ministry of Agriculture, since the forest park in Agia Fyla falls under its jurisdiction. The development of a master plan is being discussed, which will define the boundaries of the future park and the concept of its development.

Large-scale project for the entire region
The future park is being considered as a multi-stage project. The forest park in Polemidia is already effectively considered the first phase. In the future, it is planned to connect it with the Polemidia dam area, and then integrate it with other green zones of the city, creating a unified natural network.
The initiative is being implemented with the participation of several municipalities, as well as leading educational institutions, including the University of Cyprus, Cyprus University of Technology (TEPAK), and Frederick University. This emphasizes the scientific and strategic approach to urban development.
Ecology and sustainable development
The idea of creating a metropolitan park in Limassol has been discussed since 2022 as part of a comprehensive regional development program. The main goal is to reduce the negative impact of active construction, preserve natural resources, and ensure the sustainable development of the city. Studies show that green areas directly affect the microclimate, reducing air temperature during the summer period, which in Cyprus is becoming increasingly hot. In the context of climate change, such projects are gaining not only social but also environmental significance.
If the project is implemented, Limassol could gain a modern European-level park that will become an important part of urban infrastructure and a new attraction point for residents and tourists.
