The Central Bank of Cyprus has published its latest statistics on bounced cheques, showing a further decline in such cases. In June 2026, a total of 16 bounced cheques worth €37,188 were added to the preliminary list of the Central Information Register (CIR), which records issuers of dishonoured cheques.
Experts note that the use of paper cheques in Cyprus continues to decline as digital payments and bank transfers become increasingly widespread. Nevertheless, cheques are still used in certain business sectors, making the Central Bank's statistics an important indicator of payment discipline.
Who was added to the register in June?
In June 2026, the preliminary CIR list included 14 individuals and legal entities, comprising seven companies and seven private individuals. In addition, ten persons were formally entered into the Central Information Register during the month, including:
- 4 legal entities;
- 1 private individual;
- 5 individuals acting as directors or controlling persons of corporate entities.
Being listed in the register can significantly affect a company's ability to conduct business, obtain bank financing, and receive new cheque books.
Results for the first half of the year
Between January and June 2026, the Central Bank recorded 85 bounced cheques with a total value of €247,690. These cases involved 58 persons, including 39 legal entities and 19 individuals. During the same period, 60 persons were entered into the Central Information Register, comprising:
- 24 legal entities;
- 7 private individuals;
- 29 individuals who are directors or controlling persons of legal entities.
Compared with last year, the situation has improved
The statistics show a steady decline in the number of bounced cheques compared with the same period last year. During the first half of 2025, the Central Bank recorded 115 dishonoured cheques worth a total of €269,884 involving 71 persons. In 2026, the figures improved:
- the number of bounced cheques fell to 85;
- their total value declined to €247,690;
- the number of persons involved dropped to 58.
This indicates a gradual improvement in financial discipline among both businesses and individuals despite ongoing economic challenges.
Why this indicator remains important
Although paper cheques are used far less frequently today than they were just a few years ago, they continue to play a role in commercial transactions between businesses. The Central Bank of Cyprus monitors these violations to improve transparency within the financial system and reduce credit risk.
Being entered into the Central Information Register can affect the business reputation of a company or entrepreneur. As a result, the continued decline in the number of bounced cheques is regarded as a positive sign for both the banking sector and the Cypriot economy as a whole.
