The University of Cyprus expects to welcome approximately 1,300 new students in the upcoming academic year. Classes will begin on September 7, and the number of first-year students is expected to remain similar to previous years. One of the university's main challenges continues to be the provision of student housing. The university plans to allocate 100 dormitory rooms to newly admitted students. Accommodation will be assigned based on socioeconomic criteria, meaning that only students who meet the established requirements will be eligible. Kleantis Pissarides, a representative of the University of Cyprus's Learning and Student Welfare Service, noted that demand for student housing remains high, while the number of available rooms is still limited.
Cyprus Is Preparing to Build New Student Dormitories
The University of Cyprus acknowledges that the existing accommodation capacity is insufficient. As a result, consultations are currently underway with government authorities, including the Ministry of Finance, regarding the construction of new student residences. The project is still in the preliminary stage, with the necessary studies currently being prepared. According to Pissarides, the university and the government are discussing the additional steps required before construction can begin.
If the process can be accelerated, the first phase of construction could be completed within approximately two years. Once finished, it will provide additional accommodation for students. Expanding the university's housing capacity is particularly important given the growing demand for student accommodation in Cyprus. The limited number of places in university residences forces many students to look for housing on the private market.
The University Supports Students with Limited Financial Resources
In addition to providing accommodation, the University of Cyprus offers financial assistance to students experiencing financial hardship. Support is distributed through the Student Welfare Fund and is also allocated according to socioeconomic criteria. The application process usually begins in October, and the university aims to distribute payments before Christmas. In 2026, student dormitories and financial assistance remain the university's primary support mechanisms. In the long term, however, the university hopes to address the student housing shortage through the construction of new dormitory facilities.
