The island's most prestigious university, the University of Cyprus, has announced a tender for the implementation of the second phase of the construction of a campus in the Aglandzia district, on the outskirts of Nicosia.
According to the release, the tender will be organised and summarised within four months, after which the winner will be able to start work immediately.
It should be noted that the second phase of the ambitious project consists of two parts: the completion of the campus road network and the creation of the campus park. More specifically, this includes
The creation of a new circular road network of 1,270 metres;
- The extension of a double rectangular storm drain in the western part of the existing regional road network and in the area of the Cancer Centre;
- The construction of three new bus stops, including the installation of the necessary signage;
- Design and construction of three raised pedestrian crossings in the vicinity of the bus stops;
- Electrical works;
- Mechanical works;
- Creation of a large park, landscaping, planting and irrigation of trees and shrubs;
- Construction of a new lake with an island and two footbridges. It will be connected both to the existing lake and to the Calogeros River through the construction of an open canal and the necessary spillways;
- Construction of a network of cycle and pedestrian paths throughout the park;
- Construction of small bridges over the existing embankment within the park and over the canal connecting the new lake to the river at the points indicated in the plans;
- Construction of a small public service building (kiosk/shop) with rest area, storage facilities, toilets;
- Construction of a bicycle parking area;
- Construction of two wooden viewing platforms on the lake;
- Installation of communal facilities including: bicycle parking, resting areas (benches), litter bins and recycling bins;
- Construction of a walkway along the central axis, ending on a small plateau in front of the Calogeros River. Along the walkway there will be shaded areas with appropriate facilities (benches, etc.);
- Construction of a fence around the athletics stadium and its access road;
- Installation of horizontal and vertical signs with necessary information throughout the park, including digital signs;
- Construction of a new entrance and modification of the existing temporary car park to the east of the central axis of the campus so that it does not overlap the central axis walkway;
Construction of three pedestrian bridges across the Calogoros River, connecting the park area to the site of the future student campus.
Under the terms of the tender, all works must be completed within 24 months of the contract being signed. The contractor will also be authorised to maintain the facilities for 60 months from the date of commissioning. The value of the tender is €23.9 million excluding VAT. At the same time, interested parties must pay a sum of 500,000 euros as a guarantee of participation within one month of submitting the application.
It should be recalled that the implementation of this grand project is planned in 4 phases: project development, construction of academic buildings and student residences, creation of campus infrastructure, campus expansion.
The total construction area will be 257,650 m2. The new campus will include: academic buildings, student residences, multi-storey car parks, a large green park, an outdoor sports field, a stadium, an Olympic swimming pool, a cultural centre, an outdoor amphitheatre and recreational areas.
The University of Cyprus plans to increase its student population to 13,820 by 2030. The university currently has around 7,000 students. To achieve this, new faculties will be opened with a focus on attracting international students.
