On Wednesday, February 28, the Cypriot Department of Urban Planning announced the start of applications for the third phase of the state program to subsidize the opening of student dormitories in the historic center of Nicosia.
According to the department, the amount allocated for the implementation of this phase is €11.3 million.
- The approval of the applications will take place in several stages:
- The first involves submitting the necessary project documents for review.
- The second involves obtaining planning permission.
- The third involves obtaining a construction license.
- At the last stage, an examination is carried out and an opinion is issued from the Archaeological Department and the Fire Department.
By the way, the beneficiaries are given generous grants - the maximum amount of subsidy can reach 2 million euros.

The Department noted that applications will be accepted until they exhaust the entire budget of the program.
At the same time, the Department noted that within the first phase 13 grants totaling 363,664 euros were awarded, and within the second phase - 50 grants totaling 2,272,554 euros.
As it turned out, with the support of the state, investors are ready to invest their money in the development of the city center. After the modernization of old buildings within the city walls, the capital is expected to have between 400 and 500 housing units to accommodate local students. The largest dormitory will have 42 rooms, while the smallest will have 12. The department emphasized that they are doing their best to review the documents quickly. However, the question of building security may cause some delays.
It is expected that the appearance of new dormitories will significantly transform the image of the center of the capital and help to solve the problem of housing shortage for students of local universities.
