The construction of a large-scale water system to prevent possible flooding continues to progress apace in Larnaca.
The local municipality announced the other day that the city has completed the third phase of the project. According to the mayor's office, the works covered the area of the refugee settlement in the Agia Anargiri neighborhood. They included the construction of an extensive rainwater system. Some 3.2 kilometers of catchment pipes were constructed under a contract awarded to S. HADJICHRISTOFI CONSTRUCTION LIMITED in January 2023, worth more than €2 million.
The project was implemented within the framework of the Political Cohesion Program "THALEIA 2021 - 2027" with 85% co-financing from the European Union. Therefore, the probability of flooding in the area of Agia Anargiri after the necessary works will be 1 in 50 (2%). This is assuming that the frequency of rainfall remains unchanged.

Larnaca is one of those cities in the world where the sun shines 300 days a year. However, the rare storms that hit it during the winter months cause a lot of inconvenience to the locals.
The lack of an effective water drainage system is the main cause of constant flooding in Larnaca, with the Kamares area suffering the most. It is estimated that over the last 8 years alone, heavy rainfall has caused over €2 million worth of damage to the area.
Recognizing the need to address the cause of the constant flooding, the local town hall launched a flood control project in June 2023. Since the program was launched, three tenders have been issued: for two construction projects in the area of Agia Anargyri and Livadia (C20A and C20B), and in the area of Agios Lazaros (C20D). All projects were successfully implemented.
