The British government has given the green light to some major changes in the planning of urban areas on military bases (SBA) in the UK, including in the Akrotiri and Dekelia
The decision was made after looking at the public impact and the extra security measures that were needed to protect the local area. The updated library will be open to the public until 12 June 2025.
There are a few main things to look at here, like changes to how much space can be built, rethinking the layout of the site and stopping work on any new public or commercial buildings.
- So, they're saying that they're going to build a new school on the beach, where Lady's Mill used to be. They're saying that they're going to do that after the 2012 school closed. We've got to think about the impact on the environment, and the protected sensitive coastal ecosystems.
- There's a restaurant in Avdimou, right on the beach, and they've officially joined the planning committee. I'm looking to expand in the future, especially in the area to the west of the water outlet, which was previously used.
- They've given the go-ahead to building new roads to the coast and to building new infrastructure like schools, hospitals and electric car charging points.
- The plan is to add new zones to the existing residential and commercial infrastructure, including converting some residential sections into commercial ones, and adding new commercial sections to the existing infrastructure, with the aim of providing space for new residential projects in Akrotiri.
Here are some of the extra things you can do:
- We're doing an environmental study to see what the impact will be on the electric park next to the prison.
- We've got the green light to expand the monastic cells in the communes of Akrotiri and Sotira in nthe Limassol area
Also, there are plans to build a lot more homes in a number of residential areas:
- + 12-hectare site in Asomatos.
- + 40 hectares between the industrial zone and the Kolossos one (which has a continuous residential zone).
- + 15.5 hectares in Ormidea.
- + 55.5 hectares in Xylofagou.
- + 6.5 hectares in Achna.
- + 7.5 hectares in Frenaros.
Just so you know, the western sovereign territory (WST) covers 124.4 km² and is part of the Lima region. It also borders five other municipalities: I'm thinking of Avdiumo, Paramaeli, Curion, Limassol and Pafos. The easternmost part of the country (ESBA) in the south covers 129.9 sq. km, and 69.7% of that is in the Lärnnanaki region, with 30.3% in the Famauguist region. She has five schools (Perdamos, Ksilotombu, Ormideya, Pila and Ksilofagou) and two hospitals (Paralimni-Derinia and Ayia-Napa).
We're expecting the new features to have a positive impact on the market and to give buyers more choice. They show how we're working to modernise and make the most of the British bases. But they also ask about the need to balance the interests of the local environment and the agricultural business. We're going to be doing some public consultations up until June 2025, and these are going to be a really important part of the process of finalising the plans.
