The summer examination on the history, culture, contemporary political and social life of Cyprus will be held on Saturday 5 July.
This was announced by the Ministry of Education on Monday 19 May.
Registration for the exam will be open from 20 May to 3 June. Applications can only be submitted online via the JCC Smart payment system. During the registration process, you will need to provide
- applicant's first and last name,
- number of their identity document
- postal address
- email address
- mobile phone number.
An additional fee of €20 is required. Once registration is closed and applications have been processed, all candidates will receive an e-mail with the date and time of the test and information about the test rules.
The exam will be held in Greek. The exam consists of 25 questions, each with four possible answers. The questions cover a wide range of topics, including current events, modern history since 1960, cultural traditions and customs, geography, the system of government, the main sectors of the economy, as well as entry regulations, telecommunications, climate, language environment, currency, working hours of various institutions, health care and transport infrastructure.
The exam lasts 45 minutes. If the exam is passed (more than 60% of the answers are correct), the candidate receives a certificate which is required when applying for a Long Term Residence Permit in Cyprus or for Cypriot citizenship by naturalisation.
We would like to remind you that in 2023 the Cypriot government introduced amendments to the Citizenship Law.
One of the main changes was the introduction of tests on knowledge of the Greek language and knowledge of the history, culture, modern political and social life of Cyprus. Foreign citizens working in the research and innovation sector can now apply for a Cypriot passport through an accelerated procedure. This requires
- have a certificate of Greek language proficiency at level A2 or B1, issued after an official examination;
- Have sufficient income and suitable accommodation;
- have qualifications that allow them to work in the field of research and innovation;
- have no criminal record.
If you have an A2 level of Greek, you must have lived in Cyprus for at least five years, and if you have a B1 level, you must have lived there for at least four years (instead of the five years required of all other applicants). You must also provide a certificate of successful completion of an examination on the history, culture and contemporary political and social life of Cyprus.
