There was an emergency at the Neon Mall in Paphos on Tuesday 15 October.
At around 1pm the roof of the Superhome store in the mall suddenly collapsed. Three shoppers were injured in the incident. The victims were immediately taken by ambulance to a local hospital. Fortunately, they are all in good condition. The shoppers in the store are not in any danger. Doctors examined them and found that they had minor bruises.
It is not yet known what caused the roof to collapse. The management of Superhome has started an investigation together with the police. They will have to find out if the incident is related to the repair work being carried out on the building. The store has been temporarily closed to repair the damage and replace the ceiling.
As a reminder, the new Neon Mall is located at the eastern entrance of the city, next to Dimokratias Avenue.
The building has a total area of 23,188 m2 and the land on which it is located has a total area of 29,771 m2. The mall consists of a main supermarket (open plan), 12 shops, cafeterias, auxiliary rooms, common areas and warehouses. The mall also has a surface car park with 811 spaces.
The site falls within the boundaries of urban zone Ka5 (residential) with a maximum SD of % and SK of 50%. Buildings with a maximum height of 13.5 metres (3 storeys) are allowed in this area. The land on which the shopping centre will be built is provided with the necessary water, electricity and telephone connections.
The site of the Neon Mall used to be occupied by the Orphanides supermarket. However, after the closure of this chain on the island, the building was taken over by Astrobank. The bank sold the property to a foreign investor for 12.5 million euros to cover the supermarket chain's debts to creditors.
It is known that the new owner invested more than 4 million euros in renovating the building.
