Residents of Geroskipou, located in the Paphos area, have opposed the modernization of the local amphitheater.
They went on a real strike the other day, calling on the local council to "stop experimenting with the facility".
Protest coordinator Neofitos Pavlou said that while "the square certainly needs revitalization, improvements should not be made unless they are based on a comprehensive study." He added that, given the fact that the elections are only two months away, the local council should suspend all work and allow the new members of the mayor's office to review the project in more detail after the elections.
It would be recalled that the Geroskipu Municipality has been intending to expand the stage at the amphitheater and upgrade the area around it for quite some time now. Back in 2019, local councilman Antonis Thrakkides said that the small size of the inner area of the facility can be "characterized only as a decorative element". He called for the construction of a stage with a diameter of 13 meters on which to hold events, including under the light of the summer moon.
A renovated amphitheater would breathe a second life into Geroskipou Square, and residents from all over the region would be encouraged to come to the village center more often, to hold dance, theater and music events, poetry evenings and so on," Trakkides said.
Finally, he added that currently, the amphitheater is "a disgrace to the municipality of Geroskipou and a gangrene that is eating away at the fabric of the village, threatening to destroy what is left of the once thriving central square."
