The architectural project for the modernization of the old Nicosia Municipal Market into a technology center has won the prestigious Architecture Awards 2024.
The award ceremony took place recently in Athens during the International Architecture Forum SHARE Greece 2024. The prize was awarded to the architect responsible for the project, George Tsangaridis. It should be noted that the winner was chosen by 15 leading experts in the field.
Recall that the Municipal Market building is located in the historic center of Nicosia.
It was designed in 1965 by architect Stavros Ikonomou to house the retail space and offices of the capital's municipality. Renovation of the building began on January 19, 2021 and was completed almost three years later on December 29, 2023. The building was renovated and expanded. It became the headquarters of the CYENS Center of Excellence. The high-rise was equipped with laboratories and exhibition halls, work areas, seminar rooms, a multimedia studio and a production laboratory for testing innovative ideas.
The Center's move to this historic building, a prime example of Cypriot Modernism, has revitalized the life of the central district and contributed to the preservation of Nicosia's cultural heritage.
