A major upgrade and expansion of the Emergency Department at the Nicosia Municipal General Hospital began on Monday, March 10.
This was announced by the Organisation of Public Health Services (OKYPY).
According to the organisation, the works are aimed at improving the infrastructure of the medical facility, upgrading equipment and optimising space. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. The project includes:
- Extension and remodelling of the ward;
- Creation of a short stay unit;
- Complete interior refurbishment: new floors, ceilings, lighting and doors;
- Insulation of external walls to improve energy efficiency;
- Modernisation of the patient reception areas and enlargement of the waiting area;
- Reconstruction of the intensive care unit for multiple trauma patients;
- Creation of new areas for hygiene procedures and family counselling;
- Renovation of staff work and recreation areas.
OKYPY noted that during the works
- A main entrance for patients and ambulances will be maintained;
- The waiting area will be designed for 15 people;
- The number of examination beds will remain the same.
OKYPY also stressed that the project is an important step towards improving the healthcare system in the Cypriot capital. The renovated department will ensure fast and high quality emergency care, which will improve the level of medical services in Nicosia.
The implementation of the project is part of our strategy to modernise public hospitals and demonstrates our commitment to providing the best conditions for patients,' the organisation said in an official statement.
Okypy also assured that it will make every effort to minimise inconvenience during the renovation period and keep the department running smoothly. The organisation is counting on the understanding and cooperation of the public to complete the upgrades quickly and safely.
