Preparations for the FIBA European Basketball Championship 2025, to be held in Limassol next summer, are ahead of schedule.
Work on the upgrading of the Spyros Kyprianou Sports Complex, which will be one of the main venues for the tournament, is progressing at a rapid pace.
On Friday 7 March, the stadium was inspected by the Minister of Transport, Communications and Public Works of Cyprus, Alexis Vafeadis, the Head of the Public Works Department of Cyprus, Lefteris Eleftheriou, and the President of the Cyprus Basketball Federation (CBF), Andreas Mouzouridis.
During the visit, the officials were informed that the facility is 60% complete. Engineers confirmed that the project is on schedule and that the stadium will be operational by August 2025. They also mentioned that contractors and authorities are working closely together to ensure that the upgrades meet all FIBA requirements. The upgraded complex is expected to become not only the main arena for the championship in Cyprus, but also an important platform for the development of basketball on the island.
What work will be carried out at the stadium?
- Replacement of the playing surface and technical equipment to meet international standards;
- Upgrading of the spectator infrastructure, including improved seating, seating areas and entrances;
- Upgrading the lighting, scoreboard and video surveillance systems;
- Expansion of the car park.
We are pleased with the progress of the works and are confident that the stadium will be fully operational within the specified timeframe. This project is an important step forward for Cypriot sport," said Mouzouridis.
For his part, Cyprus' Minister of Transport, Communications and Public Works Alexis Vafeadis said that the government fully supports the project and is doing everything possible to make the Spyros Kyprianou Stadium a new sporting attraction for Cyprus.
